Hey science-jay its nearly been 3 months and no results fo me( i know its to early to judge), but i just dont think its strong enough when you have agressive male pattern baldness, thats why ive switched to flutamid, apprarently its stronger than spironolactone.

i'm wondering IF spironolactone works, by wich mechanism it would work. If it's comparable to finasteride, than 3/4 months would be to early to tell. But if it works differently (i think it's by blocking the androgen receptors and not as a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor), than it should work earlier.

Flutamide is still to risky for me...maybe comparible to using finasteride (where i experienced strong side effects with)

i'm wondering if topical Avodart would also have systematic effects, i think flutamide has.

Yes thats the way it works, 3/4months is too early to sudge, because the hair hasnt gone through much cycles yet.

Topical avodart doesnt have much research along with topical finasteride. Flutamid could be absorbed systemically but if used once a day the abosrbed dose will be so small i dont think it could have much effect. But then again it is important to be cautious if you have had sides with finasteride. Id say give spironolactone another 4 months and see how things go, if you dont get the results you want you could look into something else like topical RU.

that doesn't sound so good...Are you using 2% and/or 5% spironolactone? How much and how often do you apply?

I use 5% once every day. With xandrox. I have seen some new thin hairs but my hairline has gone back a little which is not a good sign.

I started using topical spironolactone a few months ago.....I can't say it's the spironolactone for sure becuase I started finasteride too, but my front and vertex are thickening up nicely.

I have not seen a single post where someone is using just spironolactone and has seen maintainance or regrowth with it. Can anyone speak for spironolactone....I am thinking of getting on Propecia....Topicals will not just do the trick

FWIW, topical spironolactone. works as well for me as 11 months of finasteride. ever did.

I stopped finasteride. over 5 months ago, started using more spironolactone. cream and have noticed no decline in results. In fact, a little more regrowth from all the other stuff I use.

At my age, I was an IDIOT for ever trying finasteride.

Old Baldy, how much phenytoin do you add to a regular 60ml bottle of Minoxidil? Also, does it leave your hair looking different or leave a residue due to the added phenytoin? Thanks!

isnt Proscar especially made for people at your age ?

You're right but read below.

The chances of contracting high grade prostate cancer are greater at my age because finasteride. can cause pre-cancerous cells to become cancerous.

It's not a big percentage increase but it's there according to studies. Also, a VERY reputable doctor, we all know, told me he does not recommend starting finasteride. if you're over 50 years old (i.e., for this same reason).

PLUS, my father has prostate cancer. It runs in the family. (My father was successfully treated but he had it.) So for me it was STUPID to take finasteride. without doing my homework.

With younger guys finasteride. can act as a cancer preventative. For us older guys starting finasteride. later in life can increase the chance of contracting high grade prostate cancer.

I'll take the baldness over contracting cancer.

I empty nine 100mg capsules to give me 1.5 percent. I remember reading anywhere from 1 to 2 percent is all you need. I'm not sure about my memory though. :)

Maybe you could find out for us Stax. Thanks.

I only put in 1.5 percent so it will dissolve. If I remember correctly phenytoin doesn't dissolve in alcohol and PPG much over 2 percent? (I'll have to do some reading on phenytoin again.)

Oh, I forgot to say that it doesn't leave much residue or change the way my hair looks. HOWEVER, I put it in regular minoxidil. and don't generally go out with that greasy stuff on my head!!

Hey Stax, why are you adding phenytoin when you're using proxiphen, which already contains it?

Techprof and I were emailing each other back and forth on alot of questions. I can't remember who suggested what we ended up using. We both use the same amount based on an "educated" guess.

So I'm not sure Techprof and I are correct. I think we're ok but not sure.

Maybe if I go back and read a patent by my hairloss idol.... :D
