Topical anti-androgens. Why such difficulty?

In inventing them I mean. It seems like a topical would be the way to go since pills have such a systematic effect. Sure, topicals are a hassle, but if they actually worked, it would be worth it, and drug companies would make a lot of cash.

Why can't they just make topical dutasteride?

Or am I over simplifying things a little too much? Are things not that easy in reality?

Topical dutasteride or finasteride would simply absorb through the skin and have exactly the same systemic effects as an oral pill, but without the convenience!

The best topical anti-androgen appears to be an experimental compound called RU58841. It has not been commercialised, even though it is very powerful and doesn't go systemic :thumbs_up: . Maybe there are some side effects or patent issues I'm not aware of which have prevented its commercial release.

I have heard about RU, but from those who have tried it, it didn't seem to do much. It seems like just another spironolactone or flutamide topical, not very effective. Then again, maybe these people never really got the real thing, or just a bad batch.

All the animal experiments show a "local" effect only from topical RU58841.

I'm interested in a topical for a friend here in the U.S.. He had high liver enzyme levels the last time he went to his doctor and may not be able to take Finasteride. He is a Norwood 5V and needs all the help he can get.

Any suggestions for him? Preferably something easy to use and not too messy or smelly.
