To those who get a prescription from your doctor for 5mg finasteride(some take a bit of persuading as every GP i've talked to is utterly clueless about the drug) you can get a generic from Boots for £5. I was going around trying to find the best price in my area and I was explaining this to the chemist and she told me she had a generic cheaper then proscar by a company called Almus for £5!!! That's like £1 a month from a major high street chemist!!!

My GP was also clueless, they all are. I order generic online, because I like the convienience of 1mg tabs and generic 1mg Finasteride is not available in the UK market (yet).

Good luck in persuading your local GP to prescribe proscar for male pattern baldness in the UK. They can all be struck off if something happens to you. That is why they don't prescribe this.

Proscar is definitely much more cheaper than propecia.

Utter utter bollocks they cannot be struck off, providing the dosage is marked 1mg they could give you 6755.33445mg pills providing you were told to just take 1mg. If anything, it would be the dispensing Pharmacist not the GP who could be held accountable.

What planet are you on?????????????????? The pharmacist can not change a doctors prescription!!!

All private prescription in the UK will usually state, 1mg Propecia 28 days. And not 1mg finasteride tablets - 28 days.

They can be struck off, if they person gets ill because of this. They won't get struck off for prescribing this and nothing happens.

Seriously Britannia. And another... no need for this language. Keep your hair on! :bravo:

Just to add my 2¢, some GP's will most definately prescribe Proscar for hair loss, as that is what mine has been doing for many years. Also, they will often work with the pharmasist to get the best value medication, something else which my GP and pharmasist do.

In my case they actually appreciate me doing some research with them and looking up generic or better value alternatives.

I think we need to clarify this!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The above state UK! MEANING UNITED KINGDOM!

It seems that in the USA or some other countries, Drs / Physicians will prescribe proscar. This is normal. But in the UK, you will struggle to get this done.

Trust me! I am a doctor in the UK. This should not be happening!!! Full stop!

It is no difference than you walking in to the gp practice and asking for dutasteride for treatment of male pattern baldness. etc etc. Although, dutasteride is not available on the NHS.

I'm in the UK, and I know a number of people who are able to get Proscar via their GP, though all but two are also Transsexual.

It might not be *easy*, but if you have a genuine reason and a decent GP/PCT you're in with a shout. Look in your NICE guidance notes (as you say you're a doctor), Proscar it is not a restricted medication.

As an aside, please don't be so patronising, I know what "UK" is abbreviated from.

edit: Also, you're wrong about Dutasteride, it is very much available on the NHS.

Dear Sir,

I am a senior NHS manager involved in the commisioning of pharmaceuticals for a major PCT. I know more about medicolegalalities than you ever will. The doctor prescribe the medication and the dosage. If the Doctor wants to prescribe a 5mg tablet and instruct the patient to take 1/5th a day this isnt only legal it is accepted practice for many medications. Do not argue with me, you will not win and risk making yourself look quite the fool.

Haha you f*****g idiot. The DOCTOR prescribes 1mg Finasteride. This can be a) A 1mg tablet (i.e. Propecia) or b) A 5mg tablet to be split into 1/5ths (i.e Proscar)

P.S If you want to post on forums pretending to be a "doctor" I suggest you do some research.
