just a few questions:

1. Did ur diffuse thinning started off with a sudden kick in, or was it a gradual process starting from say...20 years old? Did u one day just notice a dramatic change in the way ur hair felt, or did u see it coming from a mile away?

2. Does ur other body hair and pubic region have any thinning of hair? I have thinning for my armpit, pubic, arm and leg hair. weird thing is ONLY my eyebrow hair has not thinned. Am i in the process of slopecia unversallis? or is this some kind of nutritional deficiency?

is this by chance telogen eff. since i've been losing hair rapidly and suddenly one day.

My diffuse thinning started at around 22-23, with temple recession. Eventually the front started to recede more and more, then the crown started to this, evenually they met up in the middle for the diffuse thinning. The worst started to happen rather fast too, within 8 months.

Are you thinning around the sides and back of your head as well? If so, then chances are it's Telogen Effluvium instead of male pattern baldness. If your body hair is thinning as well go see a derm (although some aren't entirely helpful).

Look back 2-3 months and recall if anything out of the ordinary happened (major stress, surgery). Some drugs (e.g. accutane) cause temporary hair thinning. Hair that is shedding now usually means its been dormant for ~3 months. Telogen Effluvium means that you can shed anywhere up to 300 hairs/day.

btw - I tried to delude myself into thinking I had Telogen Effluvium at first. I'm not saying you don't have it, but if going bald bugs you, then the quicker you find out for sure and get over the denial step the sooner you can start treatment. If in doubt, check with a doctor.

Is that diffuse thinning or just aggressive male pattern baldness? I thought diffuse thinning is when your all regions start to thin at once.

i noticed a lot of hair in the sink around the age of 20/21. i noticed the little bald spot on my crown around 22. at 23 i was getting worried, and by 24, within a couple months, i had full blown diffused thinning all over the top stoping an inch before my hairline. i suppose it started somewhat slow, but when i turned 24 it got very aggressive and i began treatment. as far as body hair goes, my body hair actually grew thicker and longer from the age of 20-23 when it finally settled leaving me pretty hairy.

sh*t. I have a little thinning at the crown and temples, but I'm worried that might be my fate as well.

I suffered from major traumatic stress :freaked2: and within a year (most probably 3 months) I had a huge shoe-horn shaped baldspot on my crown (I was 20 at the time). I waited a year before using minoxidil 2% to some moderate regrowth on the top and right part of the spot. What I don't get is that my left side has gotten much worst than it was before applying minoxidil.

Anyways, at first it appeared seemingly at once on the crown with little change without using minoxidil. Then, to my great despair :bawling: I began diffuse thinning on the top this summer it started very strangely (I was 22 1/2). What seemed to be some tiny trickles started beeing seen. After having seen enough of them, I started using minoxidil 5% and proscar 3 months later. I've been on that for 2 months now. Wish me luck.

This doesn't sound very normal. I was diffusely thinning very slowely since i was 16 - 17 (it all makes sense in terms of puberty, thats when i first started getting some facial hair). this year at 23 it started to kick in more, and i started noticing hairs falling out in the shower sink, etc. This also coincides with beggining to get more body hair. An increase in DHT is supposed to cause more body hair, and less hair on the head.

thanks for the post. just curious what exactly is diffuse thinning. i came to the impression that its was thinning ALL over the scalp. but then u said that if i'm thinning in the sides and back as well, i have Telogen Effluvium instead of diffuse thinning.

i was actually in an acceptance that i have male pattern baldness a month ago. but then i saw my hair stylist yesterday and he insisted i didn't have it. he looked and felt my sides and back hair and funny enough they were exactly like the hair on top. the only thing is it was much thicker 8 months ago OVERALL.

i might be guessing its a kind of nutrient i can't absorb or process cause my body and facial hair has been thinning as well. i've been consistenly losing weight. although its not a rapid lose of weight. more like one pound in two months ever since 3 years ago. i'm bummed out cause i took a body check and everything was normal. maybe i just have a very aggressive type of male pattern baldness which kicked in out of nowhere.

Don't jump to conclusions about your type of hair loss. FIRST and foremost you need to evaluate your condition. If your dad is bald, or your uncles, or anyone else in the family.... chances are you have male pattern baldness... almost 99% of the time. The classic misconception of the word "thinning" also needs to be stopped right here. When your hair THINS, the follicle is decreasing in diameter and causing a thinner hair to grow. You could theoretically thin to mere fuzz on your head without actually shedding a single hair till the process is done. A good rule of thumb is that the hair shaft should be tapered from thin at the cuticle to thick all the way down the shaft and white toward the root, then have a chunk of crap at the end. The thinned hair will start to look finer toward the root.

If your hair is THINNING, then you are almost 100% assured you have male pattern baldness. If your hair is just falling out then you probably have a different problem altogether... thyroid condition, alopecia areata, scarring alopecias. Anything.

Hope this helps to a degree

well, it kinda helped and did not... LOL

first u said if my dad or uncles are bald, 99% chance i am. could it be safe to say the vice versa? if yes, then i'm 99% NOt going to go bald simply cause my dad and his 7 uncles are 50+ and they have above average amount and thickness of hair even for an asian (not being racist here, but it really seems like asian countries experience slightly less baldness problems than the states).

but then u say that if i'm thinning, there's a close to 100% chance i've got male pattern baldness. funny thing is when i look at the hair shaft, they look consistenly the same length. but when i pat my hair with my hands, it definately has less bounce. also looks less dense.

i'm going to spend some money and see a compentent derm.

some of the hairs that i shed are really thin, they seem to be the same thickness the whole way down, but some are super thick. thick like a pubic hair. It just doesn't seem to make sense. Most are thin/normal though.

I'm thinking that i have male pattern baldness, and some other thing goin on though too that's causing some kind of Telogen Effluvium. All the hair seem to come from the top though.

I'm just saying that when hair is thinning, the overwhelming majority of cases..well over the 90% mark... is caused by male pattern baldness. So it's safe to say that you are losing it due to male pattern baldness. But don't let me diagnose you from my armchair a million miles away. Go see multiple doctors and get plenty of tests done if you have ANY doubt in your situation. But be warned... in this fight, time is sometimes a luxury of which you have precious little of. I wouldn't waste much of it.
