Quick background 27 , 100% honky., been balding since 19, but have been on the finasteride for 6 months, big time diffuse thinner right down the middle of the scalp (i waited too long) and crown & temple recession as well..the finasteride seems to be effective so far, but kinda slow for my situation , so i was thinking of adding the minoxidil...but i also wanna shave my head pretty soon, so i was wondering if i end up applying it, i just dont want my blad *** head to be looking red or irritated if i happen to start the treatment for the first time....also.
~Do any of you guys tan (yeah i know its gay to ask ) but how do u get the tops of your heads tan in the winter? do u guys use the stand up booth ? or any sunless tanners? i live in chicago, I just dont wanna look like frigin moby or billy corbin...

~ i can probably pull off the skinhead loook, i am kinda built so i wont look too bad, but i am not sure if i start the minoxidil before or after i shave it...i think i'll probably start w/ the clippers at the #1 setting....then maybe the Mach 3...any advice for lotion anything to relieve/prevent irritaton?

happy holidays

shaving

First: Shaving your head is quite liberating...espeically if you are athletic and have the typical "western European" look. I have been having great results with minoxidil so far (almost 4 months) but I have been shaving my head for 3 years, so I feel qualified to answer your question.

If you are somewhat tanned already, your scalp will stick out. I am very fair and very "skinhead" looking, so shaving it didn't matter because the top of my head was the same hue as my face and neck. I suggest going to a #1 guard or a no-guard approach and just go about your day-to-day operations and eventually your head will start to tan up. You won't notice at first, but just little errands here and there, out in the sun (even in Chicago) will eventually tan up that head for you.

I strongly suggest that if you can pull off this look, that you do so. Grow a goatee (and keep it very short and trimmed). I am applying about 1m of minoxidil twice a day. It is more difficult to "contain" when your head is completely smooth, because it runs all over the place...put a little on the top and rub it in, and then the front...it will dry quickly. If you have 1/4 inch hair (say, from a #1 guard), the minoxidil will stay in place better I have found.

Keep shaving it, letting it grow out every two weeks or so. I typically shave it with a razor all the time, and when I am ready to let it grow out (some), I start on day one by continuing to shave up the sides and back, because that hair grows quicker...so that you have essentially, a little mohawk...by day 2-4, the hair on the sides is filling in, but you have a little longer (and slower growing) hair on the top, so it looks more natural. If you do NOT do this, and you let it all grow out at once (from regular razor shaving), at the same rate, in other words, stopping the razor shaving and letting it all grow at the same starting point, you run a risk of the sides and back (darker, thicker hairs) giving you a modified "horseshoe"...because the top will be thinner and slower growing.

I hope this makes sense....put up a mirror in your shower..get another mirror, and one day, after shaving it, just leave the top part, like a military/mohawk type look...shave it that way one or two days, leaving the top part...within days, the rest will fill in. Or, you can continue to go with NO-guard on the sides and back and #1 or 2 on the top.

I do not use ANY lotions or anything on my head...I used to use aloe and realized it was making my skin redden up. This isn't your face...this skin is more tender...doing it in the shower, then letting warm water run over it, will sooth it. After you shower there will be some redness...that will pass in a half hour or so (depending on how "white" you are...I doubt Italians would have this kind of skin).

Sorry so long..but wanted to help you out. Believe me, most women (especially white ones) want a man with hair...their ideal is a guy like Ben Afleck or Jude Law...BUT the good news is, many latinas and black women LOVE a shaved-head white guy...AND the white women who DO like shaved heads? can be ANYONE...I shaved mine 3 years ago, and got TONS of pussy, and I'm talking top quality. Some women, including gorgeous ones, LOVE the manliness that a shaved head brings, if you can pull it off. It makes you look (and feel) tough..believe me...when you ride public transit you will notice that no guy is going to f*** with an in-shape bald badass.

You can either hit the tanning bed for a few weeks and that will get you tanned, or you can go to one of those pigment tanning machines where they spray a mist on you and it changes your skin color. It's like getting painted with a tan and is very quick, I believe that can also be found at your local tanning salon. The other option would be to just head down to Target or Wal-Mart and pick up some Bronzing Cream, which is like a tan in a bottle. You just put some on your hands and rub it on and you have an instant tan that lasts for a week or so.

It's funny that you took the time to write an entire summary of the experiences related to a shaved head, because you practically related my same story. I was shaving my head on and off for a consecutive 4 wks, and then started to let it ride out. The only thing that I used to do differently than you was to fade in my blade to #1 clipper, instead of just leaving the step-looking mowhawk (I have an adjustable trimmer and took advantage of this).

It felt good when I was getting the bald cuts, specially the skin sides/#1 guard on top, and I think it is going to be my permanent haircut eventually after I get one more grow-out out of my system. I think I am going to pull off a #6 or #7 on top with 0.5 (no-guard 0.5) on the sides, before going back to the blade/#1 top combo.

Another reason I like the short cut better is because since my hair is thick and starts to curl after an inch (I never let it grow to and inch anyway), the #1 guard on top keeps it maintenance-free, and easy to apply minoxidil as you mentioned earlier. Right now I am at about a #3 on top with a .5 on the sides. Holla at yo boy...

i have buzzed my hair down to a level 1 before with clippers and it was nice not to have to worry about it then. start with a level 3 guard and work your way down. (trust me on this one). i wouldn't just shave it smooth with a mach 3..just yet. it can be a shocker for most people.

i don't understand why people should be "built" before shaving their heads though, i'm tall and thin and think it looks fine.

yes i tan in the summer, and use tanning beds in the winter. i have tried "self tanners" in the past , but my skin is allergic too them.

Yeh I see what you mean about the thinning hair on top growing slower and giving a premature horseshoe effect...think I'll take your advice next time, do a #1 on the sides and a #2 on top maybe instead of #1 all over.

By the way, your comment about women loving blokes with lots of hair like Jude Law - take a look at this pics, he actually has a receding hairline and losin hair at the temples :) He just coveres it well, and being rich and famous and good looking also helps with the women i guess

Has anybody ever shaved their head against the grain? I did once and it's a hassle. You allow the possibility of getting ingrown hairs, razor bumps, and irritations. It looks awesome though, as it's the cleanest possible look a human head can ever have...
