To long-term Propecia users

Hello folks, I have been thinking about approaching my doctor to give me a prescription for Propecia, but before I do so, I have a few question which I was hoping that you would be able to answer:

1) For those people who have been taking this stuff for 5 years or more, do the dramatic shedding episodes eventually stop?

2) I know that some people cut their tablets: is 1 mg too much, just the right amount, or does it vary on an individual basis?

Thanks :)

1 mg is the optimal amount for most people. Some people take more, some take less.

The ones who cut their pills usually buy the 5mg proscar or fincar and cut it into 1.25mg pieces, this is what I do because its pretty cheap.

People who have side effects usually buy the 1 mg finpecia or propecia and cut it in half when they reduce doseage to try to cut down on side effects. Chances are you'll be good and won't have any real side effects.

Thanks for the response :)

I have been looking through the success stories section and in a way it has discouraged me. I mean, sure they are/have experienced great results; however is it really worth it? With the ups and the downs of shedding cycles: is having hair really worth the emotional roller coaster?

It seems like even if you do experience good results, because of what you have to constantly go through, it's more or less a pyrrhic victory. Is it really worth it?

not everyone sheds. some people do, some don't. look at Peapoddy. he hasn't had a shed yet

i haven't really had any "sheds" either

if you do shed, you only shed miniaturized hair that you're going to lose anyway. hair that is still going strong will not be affected.

do the hairs that shed grow back?

My hairloss is snail pace like SE Freak's but worry that the miniturized hairs I have on my head that are lighter coloured at the root won't grow back.

People with sheds I've seen are people who seem to have very aggresive MBP or diffuse thinning. People with a bit at the temples and/or crown don't seem to get it.

Yeh most people who go through sheds are very nearly bald and it's really aggressive.

I'd jump on finasteride and minoxidil and not worry about it. You might see some kind of initial shedding but it shouldn't be enormous (not hundreds of hairs per day like some people have).

I've been putting off finpecia for a while. Had a good head of hair and I THINK I've had super slow thinning at temples and double crown for about 5 years. I have longish hair. The sheds aren't so bad that you need to shave your hair are they? I don't care about seeing hair around me just don't want to shed so bad that it looks like I'm all of a sudden losing my hair.

if your hair is slowly thinning you are not going to see any shedding of any sort. Keep your hair long and let finasteride do its work.

Shedding from finasteride is not really common anyway, it's not a real side-effect and I suspect it's more coincidence that people get sheds on finasteride than the finasteride really causing it (or else it would have been mentioned in the merck studies on propecia).

Only a few oddballs have had weird stuff happen like Irishpride, but he's had a weird hair case altogether, so he shouldn't be used as a "normal" person's response to finasteride

I suspect if you start on some finpecia every day, by 3 to 6 months you should see some sort of results starting, either a few hairs growing in or maybe a lot, who knows.
