Hi everyone.

I’m new to the forum. I’m a man in my early 20s feeling quite low due to hair loss. I recently came across this forum and think I may be suited to giving it a go with the prevention tablets

UK. Sorry I should have mentioned

Where I live, I had to contact a GP in order to get a hold of a dermatologist. Maybe it's different in the UK though. I think there are plenty of UK lads here, just wait for their input.

You can get a referral from a gp to a dermatologist but you will have to pay anyway as hair loss (for men) is seen as a cosmetic issue.

Otherwise you can arrange to see one privately, you can look through Bupa or other healthcare providers but you are likely talking £150+ for a consultation

A dermatologist is your probably generally your best bet, as many/most gp's probably won't know what finasteride is. You can still try asking your gp though

Even if you have to get a referral to a derm initially, your gp may be willing to give you scripts from there on out after a derm initially prescribes them, as my gp does

I'd argue that all Gps know what finasteride is. It's generally prescribed for benign prostatic hyperplasia which is a very common condition in older men.

They would however be wondering why the hell you are asking for it for hair loss

the fact that you call them "prevention tablets" means that the first thing you need to do is educate yourself, because no dermatologist is going to do it for you. Propecia (finasteride generic) is what you're talking about, and it can come with several side effects. Whether or not a derm will tell you this (probably not) you need to learn about them. Post pics of your hair and give us more information on yourself if you want serious advice.

yup, every GP I've gone to has known what it is... but they know NOTHING about it's treatment for hair loss. Unless it's a balding male doctor. Then they just pretend they don't know. haha
