I'll keep it as short as possible: I'm 29 M from India, suffering from hair loss since 27. I'm 29 now, NW3, deeply receded corners, badly thinned crown. 2 years back, I had perfect hair.

"Genuinely" concerned doctors are difficult to find here, even more so for Trichologists/Transplant surgeons. For two straight years now I've been to more than 4 doctors, each a hair transplant specialist, and none have taken my case with any significant level of seriousness. I never approach them for transplants, but I approach them hoping that they will put me on finasteride/Min etc., but instead, they always suggest ridiculous stuff like Biotin supplements and Saw Palmetto pills: Yes, these are fully qualified hair transplant surgeons who are members of the IAHRS.

Typical comments include:

  • You don't need to do anything, try these supplements (Biotin, Vitamins)
  • You are not in the stage where you can need a transplant

Problem with these doctors is: they don't see my receding hairline (now NW3-ish, was NW1 in 2007), or the progressive thinning and miniaturization etc. They like to pit me against the lowest common denominator of hair loss standards: "Has decent hair, hence nothing required". They don't see the loss happening everyday, and how things are progressing from bad to worse.

Sometimes I feel that had I started finasteride/Min/Topical-spironolactone/nizoral in 2011 itself, when my hairloss had just started, I may not have had a nearly bald crown today or a NW3 hairline.

Recently, I saw another doctor, explaining my entire case history since 2011, and this was his response: "Try this saw palmetto shampoo, and these saw palmetto capsules, and you can sign up for my $$$$ program of Argan Oil massage and laser combing".

Needless to say, having understood how DHT works and the related 5-AR1 mechanisms, I left without much further discussion.

I'm at my wit's end. I've come to the conclusion that these people don't care a toss, and they simply won't pescribe finasteride/Min to a young candidate like me. Something tells me there's a conflict of interest, and they want me to evolve quickly into a candidate for transplant.

What should I do? Have any of you faced a similar situation? Did you feel scared to try finasteride without the recommendation of a doctor?

In 2 years, I've gone from a dense NW1 to an NW3 with a balding crown, badly receding hairline with deep corner recession, and a shed that continues to date. Hairloss is rampant in both my maternal and paternal lines, with all elders completely bald, and my dad was totally bald too. So it's genetic, and not some alien disease.

Suicide seems like an option, given the sorry state of doctors in my country.

Sounds like you already know what you need to do, ie. take finasteride/dutasteride asap. You do not need a doctor tell you to take it, nor are you that young at age 29 for a finasteride. People here take finasteride even as early as 16. finasteride in your country should be easy to find and possibly still inexpensive even given your economy and currency exchange.
