Hi all,

I'm 22 years old and all my life had a head of thick curly hair. But since male pattern baldness runs trough to both sides of my family I allways checked my hair for any change so I could immediately start finasteride when my time had come.

A few weeks ago I noticed that my hair might be a bit thinner than let's say a year ago. I'm not 100% sure but I think that I might be right.

Should I now directly start taking finasteride or should I wait till I am absolutely 100% sure?

Thanks in advance!

Honestly, if you have aggressive hairloss on BOTH sides of your family (like..shiny bald on both sides), I would start at the first sign of hair loss. If there is a reputable doctor in your are who specializes in hair loss I would go to them and have them look at your scalp under their special little camera that can show miniaturization. For recommendations on doctors I would go to thebaldtruth.com and go to their forum and ask people there. They are a bit more knowledgeable about doctors over there than on this forum I think.

Personally I wouldn't want to take finasteride unless I was sure I was thinning. It's got drawbacks for a lot of people. Are you losing more hair than normal?

Find some pictures from a year ago that you can use to compare. Pull your hair back, take a pic, then upload it here so we can take a look.

Yes, you want to make sure you have male pattern baldness before you start taking finasteride...but that DOES NOT MEAN "Wait until you can tell that you're balding." Keeping the hair you have is 100x EASIER than regrowing what you've already lost. The longer you wait (assuming you have it), the more hair is going to be gone forever.

Right make sure its male pattern baldness which is easier said then done since there is no sure way to tell except wait until it gets obvious. If you lose a lot of hair there is no real way short of some expensive crappy hair transplant so its not even really possible to do anything but keep what you have.

Don't even listen to him. It's not that dangerous of a drug. Millions of men have taken it and been completely fine.

I saw a dermatologist about propecia maybe 3 years ago and he told me he had a ton of guys using it and I asked him if he thought it was safe. He told me yes. I ended up losing the prescription somewhere and with how slow my hair loss is going I am kind of glad I waited I always have the option of starting. I have no reason to doubt him and honestly finasteride has been in use for like 20 years so if something bad turns up tons of other people are way way ahead of you and then you can stop.
My boss at my last job said her husband used it and that was like 5 years ago so again tons of guys use it successfully with no problems.
You could always go natural an eat some poisonous mushrooms. What going natural even means is anyones guess since every drug in existance is made from molecules composed by atoms that are all found in nature as well as all the equipment needed to make them. I mean its just stupid maybe eating a natural diet would be good though.
