Time for finasteride or minoxidil? What do you guys think?

I have been losing a good amount of hair for the past two years or now, but not until recently have I started noticing a thinning or miniaturization of the hairs on my hairline. I am not sure where I am on the Norwood scale. Is it a good idea to get on finasteride or minoxidil at this point? I am a little afraid of any sides from finasteride and am not sure if the minoxidil is going to help my hairline and my crown seems fine for now at least. Any comments/opinions are appreciated!

are you sure? I thought that miniaturization and the shorter hairs is the beginning of the receding hairline? I have always had very thick hair and it has definitely started to thin quite a bit, maybe I need to take better pics?

I see what you're seeing, which could be be the earliest form of male pattern baldness beginning, or those few follicles have always grown slower, have broken or some other factor of course.

Oh by the way, your skin looks extremely healthy. Any tips?

i don't think they have always grown slower, and it is much easier to see my scalp through my hairline than it used to be.

In terms of my skin I appreciate the compliment but I don't really do anything to it, I have had naturally oily skin my entire life which has both positives and negatives haha.

Anyone else want to weigh in on this? I have not taken any action as of yet but feel as though I should in order to keep what hair i have.

no one? I just showered and probably lost 30 or so hairs and another 30 after drying and brushing. I feel as there is no way I am not beginning to lose my hair and have scheduled a dr apt with my GP for the 26th of this month. I am going to pick up some generic rogaine this week and start and hopefully start on proscar later this month.

I went to my GP and she agrees that there is some thinning and recessions (I asked about a natural recession and she said that im too young to be experiencing that) so I am going to purchase liquid minoxidil and set up and apt with my dermatologist about saving my hair. I think I should take different pictures for you guys, as I can clearly see my scalp through my hairline at this point. Any other advice or opinions are welcome

Minoxidil on that ?! Really don't panic your hair are so beautiful, no receding at all,
how old are you ? 25? I think you have already your mature hairline, and it's pretty nice like that
I never had such beautiful hair LOL, even when I was 16 T_T".

But if you want you can post a picture with wet hair, from over your head, in order to see more

ha I appreciate the compliment but i think the first pictures were probably not the best at showing what I am seeing. I took some better ones which show my view better. These pics are after a recent haircut, with very wet hair and under direct light. The top of my head and crown still look fine but the hairline is getting worse in my mind. Tell me what you think. I think one side is worse than the other, as i have parted it on one side every day for several years now. Does minoxidil work well on the hairline?

went to dermatologist yesterday and she wrote me a prescription for nizoral and generic propecia. I am going to try rogaine and nizoral for 4 months and if there is no effect or more loss of hair i am going to implement the propecia.

I think your hair is fine! Did your dermatologist actually diagnose you with early male pattern baldness?

I personally wouldn't go for finasteride at this stage. Potentially overkill (and the side effects may not be worth it - although different for everybody). If you're fixed on going with either one, minoxidil would be the preference. That said, I'd personally jump out of the starting gate a little slower and go for something like Low Lever Laser Therapy (HairMax Laser Comb for example, which is also FDA approved). Less side effects, ultimately lower cost (in the medium to longer term) and potentially all you'll need in early onset. Don't get me wrong. The others work, but it's taking the approach of 'I don't know my enemy so I'll bring out the heavy artillery'. I'm not sure it's justified just yet in your case and, remember, you're talking about a potentially long dependency here with minoxidil and finasteride (until they find a cure or better treatment) that shouldn't be taken lightly.

she doesn't think that I need the propecia as of right now but I wanted it in case I need it in the future so I dont have to go see her again. She didn't diagnose me with male pattern baldness but said that there is a lot of sebum/dry skin on my scalp so thats why I was given the nizoral prescription. I am not sure if this is 100% male pattern baldness but I am most definitely losing hair as I see it falling in the sink daily and on my hands when I wash my hair and it isnt nearly as thick as it used to be. I believe there is thinning of my hairline and my GP said she saw the same thing.

Understandable, but I am not trying to rub it in anyones faces. Its a forum for hair loss in general and I believe I am in the early stages of hair loss and therefore wanted some advice and suggestions. I would like to catch it early to try and stop it as soon as possible.
