Thyroid loss - mechanism?

Hey guys,
I was diagnosed as hypothyroid and I'm starting synthroid today...I'm not sure that low thyroid is the cause for my hair loss but it is not the typical pattern so I'm suspicious. Can anyone explain (or provide a link) the mechanism behnd thyroid-related loss? I mean, obviously with thyroid loss DHT is not the culprit so what is? I'm not aware of any direct dependency of hair on thyroid hormone, but is it that simple?

Thanks,
Luke

Luke, I remember your case and it didnt look at all like male pattern baldness.

It is probably due to your thyroid.

off topic..but what were your lab results..any idea?

plus..are you losing hair from the back of the head?...the nape of the neck area?..

is your hair the same diameter throughout..

synthroid has been known to cause sheds in many, i would've suggested armour natural thyroid med..but your Doctor would know better.

Ha ha, which results do you want - they took 9 vials of blood! My t3 and t4 were slightly below normal (I don't remember exact numbers) but my tsh was not that high...like 3.1 I think. A lot of the labs haven't come in yet - I think she's checking my dht actually, that will be interesting to see...

I think that you should be glad that your hairloss is attributed to a thyroid condition rather then male pattern baldness. this can be cured as compared to male pattern baldness which is only treated for the symptoms rather then cured. your hair should come back with the appropriate treatments as it appears that dht is not the cause of your hairloss.

thyroid disorders are known to sometimes bring on male pattern baldness early, similar to a t.e . but if his hairloss didnt have an male pattern baldness pattern then yeah, i guess you'd have a great chance of regaining lost hair.

in my case i'm not so lucky. my TSH is 4.3 , but i've lost hair at the temples as well as diffuse throughout . so its male pattern baldness + thryoid ..thats the worst!. i'm also receding upwards from the back hairline.

I would be overjoyed to find out that my hairloss is due to a thyroid condition, because then it would (presumably) come back in the coming months now that I've gotten my thyroid taken care of. I'm not ready to conclude that it's not male pattern baldness, though, and I definitely don't want to get my hopes up and then continue to lose my hair. The reason for this is that my dad began losing his hair in his early 20's, so I have a family history of male pattern baldness. Admittedly, I did start losing it much earlier than him, but it's possible that I just have a weird pattern of loss, but still male pattern baldness. I guess all I can do is wait and see. For anyone that has had thyroid loss, how long after starting medication did it take to notice an improvement?

Thanks,
Luke

Yes a hyperthyroidism or a thyroid condition causes a chemical imbalance which can cause it to male pattern baldness accelate or start early. Im not sure how to explain but I know a good chiropractor can. I think it can be a main contributor to male pattern baldness. Sorry.

Hey skeptical, how long after starting the thyroid medication did you begin to feel better? And also, how bad was your hairloss and how bad is it now? Was it just diffuse or was there any recession?

Thanks,
Luke

Thanks for the info. As far as the psoriasis, are you sure that it's not a reaction to one of your topicals? Many people react to the propylene glycol in regular minoxidil.
