Hi, if anyone on this forum knows anything about thyroid disorders, please read this and let me know what you think...

I'm trying to figure out the cause for my thinning, as pretty much noone in my family - dad, brother, uncle, cousins, etc - is bald (everyone has full head of hair) except for one of my grandfathers.

Here's what I have:

- dry skin (especially face and hands)
- "puffy" face and cheeks
- COMPLETE inability to gain weight no matter what or how much i eat
- frequent bowel movements (approx twice a day)
- EXTREMELY dry and coarse hair, people say it feels like straw
- What I think is an irregular pattern of hair thinning

For anyone that is knowledgeable, does this sound like a thyroid disorder? I have an appointment at my doctor, but it's not for another month, and I'd really like to know if maybe I have hyperthyroidism or something like that...

Please help! :(

I'm beginning to wonder myself if I'm suffering from some sort of thyroid disorder too, considering I'm tired 24/7, eating doesn't help me gain weight, my hands are usually quite shaky, i've been having frequent bowel movements lately (sometimes 4 times a day), my skin is generally quite dry, and my hair looks so much like straw! It's so dry and coarse all the time. I dunno if I should go see a doctor?

For both of you the best bet would be to go and see a doctor, trying to name symptoms of a condition that could somewhat be serious is better left for a dr to diagnose. hopefully all goes well but as I said if you are worried see a doctor.

yea but if you have a PPO or no insurance at all why bother going to the GP.
However if you have a HMO plan you'll most likely need a referal.
Then your insurance company will say they never got the referal and charge you then you have to take a day off work to spend 8 hours on the phone with someone at the insurance company who is a moron and keeps saying hold on I have to AXE the manager and you end up paying for it anyway since your GP lost the the original referral.

Oh yea USA insurance rocks :hairy:
Don't even get me started when I had to be rushed to the hospital for some crazy 106. fever and they said that since I didn't call the Dr's office first(at 11pm BTW Dr.s closed and all you get is an answering service.) I'd have to pay out of pocket.
Took me weeks to clear it up.

UMMMM sorry for the rant

BHD !!!!!

the UK's National Health Service is variously good and bad, but it it FREE!!!

you walk in with anything from a broken neck and a perforated liver to dry skin and back ache and you walk out with out having to put your hand in your pocket, it's our own little bit of communism and I kinda love it for all it's faults.

LOL!!!!!

south London thing also

somebody can be very intelligent and then they say AXE instead of ask and they are immediatly reduced to "this person should be wearing a helmet 24/7" in my mind. :)
