Hi guys, I’m 18 three months into finasteride 1 mg and I’ve been experiencing shedding and diffused thinning recently it seemed like the shedding was lessening. However today I woke up and did the pull test on my fringe and pulled around 10 hairs out , this happened every time I tried to all over my head . I then had a shower and saw around 200 terminal and vellus hairs on my hands. This is extremely worrying as I’m only 18 with very thin hair. I have also lost some density with my chest hair but my beard remains thick and full. What are my options should I stick on with finasteride or ween off of it. Hope I get some replies as I really need some advice with this issue. Cheers

3 months is not long enough to see the improvement from finasteride however that amount of shedding is little too much given that you are 3 months in. I would recommend to see a dermatologist at this moment. If you haven’t done blood test yet I recommend do it as well. Genetics may not a single cause of your hair thinning and losing. I did blood test twice; first test was general then my thyroid level was little low so I ran it again but everything was normal. However, you might find out some other kind of weird deficiency of hormones that you are not aware of.

I am a diffuse thinner 4 months into finasteride and rogaine. I am noticing my hair is getting thicker and way less see through on my scalp. I started noticing this just 3 weeks ago. I still shed tho around 20-30 strands of hair when I shower. Don’t get off from finasteride. Give at least a year to decide whether you are going to stop it or not. I have read many posts about they haven’t seen any improvement for 7-8months but they sticked with it and in the end they have some drastic gain. So if that massive shedding continues see a dermatologist in the mean time you should keep taking finasteride.

So I should just wait it out?
And you are seeing improvements even tho you are shedding up to 29 hairs per day?

Did you go to a doctor/specialist to confirm that you have hereditary hair loss before starting finasteride?

Not all doctor's prescribe finasteride to someone your age but your doctor obviously felt you would be okay with taking it.

Shedding is not uncommon while taking finasteride. Personally, I highly recommend that you go back to see your doctor and let him know about your shed rate and more importantly, that you are losing chest hair density. It may or may not be an issue and can somewhat be expected in people who's hair follicles (in your case it has started with your chest hair) are more sensitive to the change of androgen/DHT brought on by taking finasteride.

I would see a doctor for a checkup if I were in your shoes. Finasteride is a life-long treatment so you want to make sure you are starting off on the right foot.

Update: 6 months in, shedding is down to 10 hairs a day (lower than before finasteride) my hairline and crown has seemingly thickened up, my pull tests are coming back negative and getting strong regrowth at my hairline which survives a pull test
