I see there is still a bit of hair there, though light coloured. rogaine will help that area (assuming it works) regain volume and colour.

finasteride will also help maintain what you already have there.

As far as finasteride, I've read a little....it seems a lot of people buy something called proscar and cut it into 4...is this a good idea? I read it's cheaper. Also I've read some about having some 'shedding' when starting some of this stuff. Is that always the case, and how long does it last? Also, has anyone here used Rogaine with positive results?

finsasteride would be optimal to help you out there

yes, proscar is the same as propecia, just the 5mg finasteride product, cut into 4ths to save money...

person_123 is wrong, finasteride helps most men regrow, specifically the crown (you) :)

Rogaine might help you on the vertex, but you should protect all of your hair with Finasteride (Proscar/Propecia) before you start loosing more.

Finasteride will likely grow what you’ve lost already.

I'm thinking about ordering proscar or something.....just seems that a lot of people here are complaining about bad experiences. Can anyone say - 'hey it absolutely worked for me'?

fda trials show that over 50% had regrowth, even more stopped hairloss, while i think only 15% did nothing

sides are less than 3%, 1.5% after a year on the drug

there are a lot of whining *** titty babies here, thats all, don't worry about the drug

Don’t worry about side effects. Only 2% (according to the FDA trials) get side effects.

I don’t know how many people really get side effects or imagine they have side effects.

Just try to be positive, don’t be so preoccupied with the sides.

minoxidil is a pain in the *** especially since you have a lot of hair. i've seen some good results on this forum by just using finersteride [proscar or propecia] along with nizoral. finasteride is pretty inexpesive if you get generic finasteride from an online pharmacy and split the pills into 1/4's. i got my generic finasteride from unitedpharmacies.com but have only been using it for a moth so i can't really give a full report yet except on the sides. low sex driive for a bout a month, small amounts of semen for about a month, my head was a little cloudy for a few days and haven't really seen the anticipated shed yet. i'm it will come soon though. good luck man.

Well, I have some Finpecia coming, and already have some Rogaine foam that I haven't used yet....the thing is I keep reading you have to keep using the stuff or you lose hair when you get off, so that means I would have to take finasteride the rest of my freakin life?? You think if you take it that long some sides will show sooner or later; and then Rogaine admits you will lose anything you grow if you stop. Damn, I'm real discouraged about using any of this crap now. I do have a lot of hair. If it could be just a little thicker that would be cool, but a lot of people already say my hair is pretty thick. Main thing that even bothered me recenty was some loss by the crown only, which is not standing out too bad (yet, I guess). I'm wishing I could just take something natural and get a similiar effect.....I'm reading about stuff like saw palmetto, but just not sure...

you don't lose hair that you wouldn't have lost anyway if you stop finasteride. if you stop it you will definitely lose any hair that you regrew with finasteride soon afterward, and you will probably continue to lose hair that finasteride would have held in place for you. but finasteride doesn't cause hair loss when you get off of it.

as for rogaine, you have to keep taking that also to keep any gains you've made. finasteride alone cannot maintain your rogaine gains.

There are NO hair loss cures right now, only treatments. And for a treatment to be effective, it has to be continuous. If you aren't up for it then just give up now. :)

what JayMan said... take finasteride or lose even more... until there is some type of gene therapy, you have to take it as long as you want to keep it

although I bet that at an older age, i am talking like 60s, you could stop and maybe not see additional loss, just because of naturally lower dht and T levels... but that is really unsubstantiated, my opinion only

saw palmetto is as effect as cyan pepper

i don't know about anyone else, but when i hit 60 i won't care about it anymore. i'll be happy if i can make it to the bathroom without pissing my undies.

seriously though, if i was my dad's age, like at 50, i wouldn't give a sh*t. i'd be married with kids and who gives a sh*t if i'm bald. half of people are bald at that age anyway. i'd be 10-15 years from retirement anyway.

what makes it harder is the age we're getting the male pattern baldness at. The twenties are supposed to be a very social decade

my housemate here at college is losing his hair. his dad is NW7 at 50. i can't tell him. i'd want someone to tell me if i was though. people knew i was losing it last december about, and i started on treatment in july. now i wish they had told me as soon as they noticed the general thinning. but i don't want him to get depressed about it because he's got a ton on his mind right now.

he may even already know and just doesn't care. if he doesn't care then i definitely don't want to tell him. he's about where I am , around NW1.5. So it's not really super noticeable until someone points it out to you.

T decreases with age but DHT increases

This is a crappy source...couldn't be bothered to find a better one:

"Levels of testosterone in young men are quite high, while levels of DHT are low. The enzyme responsible for the conversion of testosterone to DHT, 5-alpha reductase, becomes more active with age. Thus the levels of testosterone decrease while the levels of DHT increase."
