Stupid question:

Is it possible for a hair to just thin?

Like, without shedding and a new thinner one sprouting on its place?

I was the same way. Just seemed thinner without any noticeable shedding. Per a website: In androgenetic hair loss one rarely sees hair falling out in mass, but rather the thinning is due to the hair decreasing in diameter and length (a process called “miniaturization”).

So, it means it does get thinner without being replaced? Scary..

I got that part. But the question was: does this progressive thinning means the hair can become smaller in diameter and length without shedding?

For example: I buzz my hair, and it never grows back, as it is thinning and getting shorter?

br1, you have no pattern balding (aka you are a Norwood-0) but it's thin all over?

It might not be male pattern baldness then.

It's thinning on the temples (2 patches of thin hair) and on the top of the head.. In a weird pattern, I don't have any pics here will try to post one from my cell..

My profile is not complete on the website. My story goes as:

15yrs ago, I heard about finasteride and since my dad went bald at age of 17, I was freaking out and decided to take it. Now I think it was stupid, because I remember doing that as to prevent it - I had no male pattern baldness at all. Then, 7yrs of continuous use, I decided to quit (as i wanted to get 100% off any medicine).. I got a buzz cut, and my hair was terrible. Temples super thin, and diffuse on top. With direct light, I was definitely bald. As a result, I jumped back on finasteride. 8yrs passed by and I had a full head - which I had for like since 1yr after my break.

A couple months ago, I decided to get off it again. And guess what.. same thing.. Terrible diffuse hair, which is thinning like every day I can see a difference!!

This time I was more conscious about it, and I got some mental issues too (which not sure if I got from finasteride or it aggravate it, or no) like anxiety and depression.. So, since I quit (november,2) I am in a constant stress state, to the point I am getting around 2 to 3 hours of sleep each night. Feeling like a zombie during the day, and can't sleep at night.. I think anxiety from loosing it all, and any hormonal imbalances finasteride could have caused me (yes, I give a visit to propecia help.. fck)..

I have a medical appointment scheduled for tomorrow, where I will ask for a hormonal panel, thyroid, cortisol, etc..

I don't know if I am diffusing because I have male pattern baldness or because I am super freaked out and stressed...

My dad is bald, but my mom's dad was not (in fact only my dad and his dad in my only family are bald)..

Not sure what to do.. I surely don't want to loose my hair.. Will check the results of the tests, and if it's all good, I will discuss with the Dr. and maybe (if the case) go back to finasteride for a few years and then tapper it off (as in those 2 breaks I just quit cold turkey)..

Note: may have nothing to do, but, 2 days after I quit finasteride, I got huge pain in my prostate, last week I went to my GP and he said I had a prostate infection. Gave me 6weeks of antibiotics. Said it was very common, and had nothing to do with finasteride.. I'm lost..

This pic is from 2 months ago (after a #2 buzz). Now it grew a bit, but under the same light you can still see some parts of the scalp. And it seems to be getting worse (?). Maybe my impression that is not improving, I don't know..

To give an example of my stress level, anxiety (I also found I am hypochondriac) : yesterday measured my blood pressure.. 150/60.

Google it, off course. and found a medical article saying a high number (150), with a lower one (60) is a classic blood pressure caused by anxiety and stress. That explains why my GP didn't said a thing when I got the same numbers on my visit..

I`m trying to slow down a bit.. damn...

br1, I am 19 years old and I have the same kind of thinning as you. My hair currently is a little bit worse than the picture you provided though :(
