my hair has got thinner and thinner over the past year or so, to the point where I realise Im going to be a NW6/7 rather than the NW4/5 that I thought I would end up being. I dont get it as my dad is a NW5 diffuse but my hair is thinning so much that I am going to end up that way.

Anyways Ill get to the point. The hair on the side of my head is thinning. Is this normal for anyone else or have I got some kind of scalp infection. I know the only way is for me to go to the doctors to find out, I was just wondering whether anyone else is getting this/had this.

p.s. forgive me, Im having a really sh*t day, my hair looks like sh*t and I feel really low, but I am quite tired at the moment, so I should be fine tomorrow. But still need answers to my question.

Thanks in advance

I'm a diffuse thinner - the hair is thin on top, especially at the crown. The sides and back are thin too, so much so that I have to comb my hair in absolutely straight lines or the scalp is visible.

I think it just happens to some people, thinning all over the head. Length is the only thing which helps thin hair sides and back but the problem is that longish thinning hair on top looks awful.

Make sure you get your bloodwork done (thyroid and testosterone) and check your iron levels. Apart from that a good thickening shampoo might help - I'm switching to Aveda Pure Abundance.

I think it eventually gets to the point where a buzz cut is the only option.

im diffuse and the left side of my head is far worse than my right. Its the entire left side as well, crown, temples and sides. MSM might be a good addition for you. There is no reason why hair on the sides should thin as it is in the safe zone unaffected by male pattern baldness. Im putting mine down to a dutasteride shed at the moment and hope it will grow back in the next couple of months. tchehov is right, get your thyroid checked as an underactive thyroid can cause thinning over the entire scalp.

Blood testing is important if you are noticing thinning along the sides. There is no guarantee that the sides are the "safe zone", as male pattern baldness can affect people to a very high degree, leaving only a thing strip around the ears and lower back of the head.

Telogen effluvium often produces thinning sides and back as well, but it is important to understand that one can suffer from male pattern baldness and Telogen Effluvium at the same time.
