Hi all.

I have shaved my head for many years now after noticing thinning. I now wet shave it and in some ways it’s great. Low maintenance etc. Howevever there has always been an emptiness I have felt as my hair was such a big part of my life when I had it. I still have regular dreams about having hair.
I have recently found out that there is a local salon that does replacement systems (Thomas Samson).
Now I am nearly 40 but relatively young looking and would look younger with hair still and I am trying to embrace the world we live in. I mean how can there still be a stigma regarding men’s wigs when we live in a world where people are literally choosing their gender orientation. do with this in mind I am thinking f it. Why shouldn’t I try something that may make me really happy!!
so finally on to the questions. Firstly is this salon ok to try?
Are there systems I can have on very close back and sides to begin with or do I need to grow it out a bit?
What kind of yearly cost am I looking at?
thankyou for reading the post and I would appreciate any advice

Hi Craig,

You will need to grow your hair out from a total shave for at least two months before you will have enough hair to blend. You also don't want to go to the salon with a shaved head, as they need to see your balding pattern to fit a stock system, or create a template for a custom one.

There was just a thread about annual costs, I suggest you look at it.

I don't know anything about this salon, and I can't find a website or prices so I don't know what the offer, so I can't give an opinion.

I do suggest you shop around before deciding on whom to go with. A salon for starting out is always the best way.

Let us know how we can help.

40 is still young - still plenty of things a guy with nice hair can do at 40.

And you are right - the much-talked-about stigma attached to men wearing artificial hair is definitely on the wane. Youtube and Instagram is full of younger guys who are open about wearing nice hair systems. I don't have any hard evidence of this, but my strong sense is that more men are aware of the merits of systems and the problems with transplants and medications, and willing to give systems a try.

I haven't talked to anyone who has used the salon you mention, but the website looks bona fide, the pictures are not generic stock photos (as many salons use), and there are quite a few recommendations from people who seem to be genuine customers. Definitely worth a try. You would need to ask them what they charge for a year's service. You can do a hair system for as little as £650 a year or so, but that is doing most of the work yourself. If you want a salon to do that work it will cost substantially more.

If you want a blended style, where the system hair blends imperceptibly into your natural sidehair, you need maybe 6 weeks of growth. Alternatively you could go for an aggressive undercut style where the sides are cropped very short anyway, in which case you could get away with a lot less growth (e.g. picture attached).

I know exactly what you mean when you talk about the emptiness of having a fully shaved head and missing your hair, right down to the dreams of having hair again. I got my first hair system close to a year ago, just after turning 37, and I really wish I would have done it a decade ago. Weirdly enough every dream I have now always includes me having hair.

Everyone I work with knows I wear hair and they really don't seem to care. A lot of the issues you are worried about will soon melt away once you see yourself with a full head of hair. The stigma against men that wear hair systems is very unfair and down right hypocritical when you consider what else is being celebrated. Do yourself a favour and grow your hair out for a couple months and at least try a hair system. Incredibly few men ever go back to being bald.

Wow. That is some beard!! Your hair looks great. I have managed to leave my hair for a few days so going to pop to the salon over the weekend and get some ideas off them.
