*thin all over questions*

Today I went to a different derm and had him check out my hair. As he is rubbing through my hair he says "Wow that is some pretty thin stuff". Thanks for that!! He basically told me he really did not know what was going on with my hair and said that I have baby fine-thin hair kinda like himself. He could not say whether it was for sure male pattern baldness as my hair is thin all over. Pretty much the same thickness all around the scalp including the sides. The derm did however say if I really wanted to I could try minoxidil for my vertex. Is it diffuse thinning or even male pattern baldness if the hair is the same thickness on the sides, back, and top of head??? After close examination I'm noticing my hair is the same thickness all over. Always thought it should be thicker on the sides and back of the head. Not male pattern baldness????? Kinda confused with what he told me today. Also, as most derms, the guy seemed to know little on hairloss....................... :-x

Hairs on back and sides ("occipital hairs") are normally not affected by male pattern baldness. If you have thinned in these areas too, there is likely be another reason - thyroid disorder or lack of nutrients in the body for example.

But for someone to lose there hair due to lack of nutrients then they have to have something serioulsy wrong with them. Look at all those starving Africans. Great heads of hair! (this is not a piss take or racial abuse by the way, just an observation)

It is unlikely that somebody with a "normal" nutrition doesn't get enough vitamins but some people have problems to absorb them (especially B-vitamins).

Only go to a derm to get a prescription of Propecia. Go to a hair transplanet doctor to tell if you have male pattern baldness.

Well I'm 26 now, but can remember my hair being very thin throughout highschool. It could I suppose be a nutritional problem, but I do take a daily vitamin. Problems with absorption?? Possibly, but I highly doubt it. I think I may just have genetically baby thin-fine hair. That is what the derm told me that "My hair is like a baby's!". I don't know maybe I should have a thyroid test done. Although, the derm said that he would rule that out because I do not have any other associated problems that would occur with a thyroid problem (fatigue, etc.......).

Thats interesting as i have exactly the same problem. My "thinning" hair is the same all over my head- back, sides, top, etc. I never had my thyroid checked, but I do suffer from chronic fatigue as a result of Mono. Hm..........

Viper,
Do you notice that there is no real change in the ammount of hair you have, rather just its density? meaning, at the vertex or wherever you part your hair it my seem like you have a bald patch, but if you examine it closely do you notice that there is actually the same amount of hairs there as anywhere else on your head?
Thats my problem and Ive realized that the "bald" spot (about the size of a quarter) would actually occur anywhere that I parted my hair. Proof that my hair has just thinned all over my head and is not just at the top.

I've been on Propecia (3 years), nizoral (6 months), Vitamins (6 months), MSM (6 months), and TGel (6 months) and have noticed and incredible reduction in shedding and the majority of my hair seems to be thicker. You may want to hop on that regimen if you havent already.

Do you have any hairline changes? Particularly at the crown? Luckly, I havent noticed anything yet.

All I can really add is that I was born with baby fine hair so when I began losing it really shows bad. Especially the temples, or what's left of them. Moral of the story: it sucks to have fine hair if you have male pattern baldness.

I have noticed that if I part my hair in other areas that I can mimic the bald spot on the back of my head. I was on propecia for 3 months, but had to get off it. I had some serious side effects. I may try to start it up again soon.

"Gay" Dr. Pickart recommends MSM and flax seed to thicken up hair. MSM has worked pretty well for me.

I bought some "Courve" or whatever several months ago from "le store" but have never gotten around to using it.
