Test Booster Hair Loss

Ok, I have been taking a test booster for about a year. a few months ago I thought that my hair was getting thinner. A couple of weeks ago my son said it looks like you are balding.

I looked and sure enough it looks like it. I freaked out. There has never been any baldness in my family on either my mother or fathers side for at least 3 generations.

I am 54 and my hair has been extremely thick.

I stopped taking the test booster and started taking Saw Palmetto, Stinging Nettles, Pumpkin Oil

I put tea tree oil on my head once.

I then went and bought Minoxidil, after three days my hair is falling out even faster. I then found out about shedding.

My question is this, will reducing the DHT cause my hair to grow back, I have now stopped the Minoxidil what I thought it would do is give it a jump start.

Have I damaged myself beyond repair. Good news is I still have a lot of hair but now you can see my scalp which you could not before.

I understand shedding is increased and should normalize after a few months.

Not sure what to do...

At 54 you should be glad your hair has lasted this long. :)
Most of us on here are only in our twenties, or like me, in their mid teens.
Some pictures of your hairline could help. If there's been no balding in your family for 3 generations, you're pretty unlikely to inherit it. Who knows, it might all just be in ya head.

All the best. :)

Hello Gredxd1,

I had similar sit as you.

I used injectable testosterone for a while. Really not too much, on the low side, but noticed hair loss after a few months. I am a couple years younger than you. I monitored it for a couple more months, the hair loss continued and I stopped the test. The hair loss continued for another couple months. After a few months, hair loss stopped and now 18 m later, I d say about 80% of the hair loss has recovered.
I have not used test during the 18 m.

Are you talking of thoose over the counter test boosters? Their effect is minimal unless you are REALLY testosterone deficient... It was probably just time. Why freak out? You are 54 with kids already its considered normal at your age.
Just start finasteride...

minoxidil is meant to be used as a long term treatment. It actually causes shedding to increase in maybe the first couple weeks-months. Hence why you need to use it for years/forever. When a hair sheds the cause of that shedding was induced weeks ago. So that "increased shedding" just a few days later was not due to minoxidil. Test boosters will cause balding, but not if you take finasteride alongside with it. You can start finasteride and you undoubtedly keep what you have for life considering your hair loss obviously isn't aggressive (just starting at 54). finasteride is also a long term treatment and you need to take it for life or at least until you don't care about keeping your hair anymore. You will not need to stop the test booster if you take finasteride.

I don't think there's a real point in starting finasteride in your case. Sure your follicles are sensitive to DHT but at your normal DHT levels, your hair seems to be okay.
Your problem should resolve by itself after some time if you've stopped taking testosterone boosters, I'd say give it at least 6 months and if it doesn't get any better, consider taking finasteride.
