Temples

I have noticed that a lot of people who's temples begin to recede think that they are going bald. My temples began to recede in my early 20s and I though I was going bald. Then they stopped.

Then several years later I noticed my dad's hairline. He is 65 years old and his temples have receded a bit but he has had that hairline since his 20s. Other than that he has a full head of hair. Many people would kill to have as much hair as he does at 65.

I started to notice more people with receded temples like my next door neighbour who's temples are receded, but he is also in his 60s. I was talking to my boss about hair loss and he said that his temples receded a bit when he was young and then stopped. He is 50 and has heaps of hair.

Look at Pearce Brosnan. He too has receded temples, but is not going bald.

If your temples recede and then stop you're lucky because you have plenty of hair.

Just think people jump on medications too quickly sometimes. You can't expect to have the same hairline as you did when you were 15.

Yeah 100% agree with this poster.

I was mentioning earlier in another thread that my Dad developed early recession at 19/20, went to a NW2-3 as early as 25 and then stopped. He's nearly 50 now and still has about 80% of his hair of which he used to have when he was 15, and above all he hasn't gone grey yet.

I have the same hair as my dad, and yes I'm receding at the temples early (I'm 20 btw) and it looks like it's thinning the same way as my dad's did.

The only reason I'm on both finasteride and minoxidil is firstly, I can't be sure it's not going to be any worse than my dad's, and secondly, I was born with a deep hairline so having a receded one looks a lot worse on me.

But I agree most men my dad's age would kill to have his hair (mainly since he's not remotely grey). So my genetics definitely aren't the worst, but the only thing I hate about it is that what I do develop comes so early. :(

But yeah early recession doesn't necessarily mean you are going to go completely bald.

well smarty pants, it would be nice if everyone just stopped receeding but that's not how life works. that's like saying "no need to watch your diet you aren't getting fat, just filling out"...sure some people fill out, but lots get FAT. sure some people receed and then stop, but lots go BALD. if baldness is in the family, i would start treating it even if there is a slight chance it will stop on it's own. by the time you realize that it ain't stopping, you'll probably have lost quite a bit of hair.

Given the choice between having there 15 year old hairlines or having a james bond type receded hairline. I and many others would choose no recession at all. Having no recession looks better then being receded.

I agree, given the choice you would not choose receeded temples as a hairline. But if the choice came down to having some temple recession but otherwise a full head of hair for the rest of your life or having a full head of hair and taking medications for the rest of your life then I think its better to take the former.

Having some temple recession is very common and still looks good. Even if you have temple recession when people look at you they don't see a bald guy.

Yeah, ppl who're just losing hair in the temples but see no decrease in density elsewhere have no reason to jump on the meds. I think that you should only start treatments if you already have a mature hairline but the hairline isn't as "strong" as the non-balders, or if you're losing density around the crown, frontal area, or all over.

I personally think that a NW2 is a good hairline for anyone in their mid 20s and above.

Its a bit of a gamble really, Its best to catch baldness at its early stages, so you have greater chances of keeping good hair for as long as possible. But you might never know just how far your male pattern baldness would progress.

Do what you feel comfortable with.

To the original poster,

I hear what you are saying. Some people's hair recedes massively and stops when they are in the eary-mid 20's. Dave Matthews from the Dave Matthews Band is a prime example. He is just now starting to really lose it. Even though he had a wicked receding hair line throughout the 90's, nothing drastic happened until recently. My grandfather was the same way, unfortunately the fear we all live in is...well, we aren't are grandfathers or Dave. Cross your fingers and do what you can to be healthy I guess...

no one should just take meds in case, but when you know you are losing your hair even if you are still just an NW2, treat it.

I disagree. I have receeding temples only, and it bugs the sh*t outta me.. Maybe its because im 24 and a lot of people have all thier hair at this age. Starting treatment is the best thing I have done. I hate my receeding hair now, but If im 26-27 and my hair is the same I think I will be very happy with my look. Now im ashamed due to my age, so people my age notice. In the long run I feel I made the best choice and did not overreact in anyway by starting meds. I think im a Norwood 2.5 on right side and nw2 on left. It sucks now but I am doing what I can and time is going to be my best friend.
