I used proscar since may 07 after a year and 2 months of no noticeable resutls I decided to change to finasteride.

Ive been using finasteride since july this year and my condition has worsened as the top of my head is now thining, I am thinking of changing to Dutas arond january, but dont know exactly how to do the transition.

So any info on thsi would be appreciated.

Thanks

edit: is the dosage or dutas really 0.5 mg a day?

I'm confused by what you're trying to say. You said you were taking Proscar and then changed to finasteride. Proscar is finasteride so I'm not sure what you thought you were switching to.

As far as the dosage for dutas being .5mg/day-- since the drug is not approved for hair loss there is no correct dosage. It is prescribed for BPH at that dosage and studies that have been conducted for hair loss show efficacy at doses as low as .1mg/day.

I know proscar and finasteride are the same, but I went from getting relatively uneven doses of proscar to 1mg of finasteride each day, that is why I made the change.

Thanks for the dosage on dutas, I shall be cutting it in 4 then, like proscar...

It's a gel capsule, so it can't be divided a la Proscar; instead, people alter the frequency with which they take Avodart (or the generic version): daily, every other day (EOD), etc.

My switch from Finasteride to Avodart EOD resulted in only a marginal improvement - hence my change to a daily dose after 15/16 months - and so my biased (by my own experience) opinion is to not go any lower than EOD.

My crown and mid-scalp had improved considerably with first finasteride. and then dutasteride. EOD; the daily dose of dutasteride. continued the progression, albeit with a pause for shedding, until all signs of MBP were obliterated from said areas. But then I think they were going that way under the EOD regime, my reason for switching was the seemingly unstoppable frontal thinning....

The 'full' dose gave me: heavy frontal shedding between months 5 and 7, then several months of stability, followed by a painfully slow recovery of the shed hair. I'd say the front got back to baseline (i.e. how it was when I went to 0.5 mg/day) only a month or two before the two-year mark - this density was maintained until around the four-year mark, unfortunately these last few months have convinced me that male pattern baldness has scaled my defences.

So in a way things improved, in that the frontal loss was stalled, and of course the rest of my hair looks fantastic, but I never managed the dream: to actually thicken one's hairline.

aussie: I'm an Avodart man myself, have been since the start - no generics back then anyway.

My source is a kindly gentleman in Switzerland: http://www.merlonipharma.ch/ They charge 140 Euros for 90 capsules shipped to my front door - an ever escalating cost thanks to Sterling's woes; but then you know what fun is to be had from a currency in freefall.

I have finally ordered dutas. I have 50 or so finasteride tablets left so Ill try to make a transition using every 3 days then 2 until my finasteride runs out... then will probably not take dutas every 3rd day and maybe ease into the transition...

As for my condition, I am still losing at the same pace I was losing hair so finasteride/proscar didn't really do anything for me.

Hi...

I was wondering something...My main concern about taking dutasteride and finasteride at the same time is the fact that they could cancel each other, as antibiotics do sometimes.
Enzymology is not my field of knowledge, any advice from people able to talk about that would be greatly appreciated.

Good question, bump!

There's no documentation that I know of in the medical literature that finasteride and dutasteride conflict with each other when used at the same time, but why even take a chance with that? I'd recommend that you NOT do that. There's no real rationale for doing it, in the first place.
