Switch Propecia to dutasteride, thoughts?

Hi all, 24 years old, have been balding since 18. I still can say I have about as much hair as I had (in many pics it looks like more) than when I was 18. Started finasteride at age 20. I've had worries before that finasteride was causing more hairloss and had some sheds/wispy hairs. Now I feel like finasteride might be starting to slow down. I'm back to using Lipogaine which had helped me in the past and topical spironolactone. What do you all think about switching to dutasteride? I've had no finasteride sides except what I thought was hyperandrogenicity(oily skin,shedding) but I've kept my hair. Right now my hair is not in the condition it was a year ago.

I'd be a bit hesitant myself starting dutasteride as I don't know the long term safety profile of it, but for hairloss, it can do wondrous things. Check out this lads story. Receding in a Norwood 3 pattern, he restored his NW1 hairline using dutasteride and dutasteride alone.

Anyone else? This seems pretty unbelievable, but hey, you never know. Pretty smart kid doing enough research to just jump on dutasteride. anyone with different effects? Seems odd as I have shed for 5 years with not too much hair loss.

Holy hell that's an awesome success story! If anybody still thinks lowering DHT will melt away your muscles, take a look how buff that guy is after 2 years on the stuff! dutasteride lowers DHT by 95% too. Amazing.

Since dutasteride isn't approved for hair loss (and GSK won't pursue a patent for this indication), there isn't much in terms of formal studies. You should maybe go to pubmed and do a search on "dutasteride hair" to see what the studies are indicating. I would actually start on the stuff myself if it wasn't so damn expensive to get here.


But before you do anything, take some good pictures of your hair now, and re-assess in 3 or 6 month intervals to make sure that finasteride is actually losing it's effectiveness. You don't want to switch anything up yet until you are 100% sure you are losing ground. Good luck!

I'm 23 and taking dutasteride once every 3 days while continuing with my finasteride regimen (once a day). Absolutely no problems so far, a slight feeling of tightness in the testicles the first few days but nothing severe or painful. After this batch of finasteride runs out I'm switching completely to dutasteride.

If you are concerned then do what I did - start off with once a week and when you feel comfortable enough move onto once every 3 days and then, if you can, use it daily.

A note to all involved with this thread: I've just checked Habeas Corpse's post history and everything he has written is alarmist propaganda in regards to finasteride and dutasteride.

Habeas has been trolling the forums to try to make 5AR's look as bad as possible and trying to convince everyone not to take them. He is likely tied in with propeciahelp or who knows, maybe a law firm. He can't do much other than cut & paste stuff from propeciahelp and blurt out unsubstantiated statements like he did in this thread. When questioned for anything to support his statements, his responses mostly consist of name calling. Don't take anything he says with more than a grain of salt, and hopefully he will go away!

For Dutasteride, its action is similar to Finasteride (but 3 times more potent) acts as inhibitor meaning to block the conversion of testosterone to dihydro-testosterone or DHT (by-product of male testosterone-this is not a testosterone ok?).

In men, testosterone is responsible for the production of sperm and developing other male characteristics, such as facial hair and voice deepening

DHT is organized mainly in the prostate gland, testes, hair follicles, and adrenal glands by the enzyme 5a-reductase. If this enzyme could speak, he would say "Okay testosterone i will convert you to DHT and will organize it in the hair follicles". Our hair follicles now has DHT formed.

Do you know that our body converts testosterone to DHT?

DHT (30 times more potent than testosterone) might be good for our body but too much of it will actually affects our hair follicles by the time it goes to the dermal papilla (responsible for hair growth). It will shrinks our follicles or what they call as miniaturization.

Our hair follicle is very sensitive to DHT that is why me must be careful with the foods we eat that can increase DHA Levels. How come I don't eat this foods but I am balding still? That depends on how your body metabolized it. If it is faster or slower.

Lets go back to Dutasteride.

Dutasteride (Avodart) of GSK is off label medicated for hair loss but it is still unknown whether it will be approved by FDA or not. Finasteride is the only approved drug for this.

It is a 5-a reducatase enzyme inhibitor that blocks the conversion of this testosterone to DHT (this inhibition is done two times). Again, DHT is very helpful but could be a dangerous enemy. More DHT formed by this 5-a reductase enzyme more chances of hair loss. So we will break this chain. Lets stop testosterone from being converted to DHT that causes hair loss. so what If I have no DHT? I still have testosterone. Right?

Yes this could help but depends on a type of person and let s be aware of the contraindication mainly hypersensitivity and side effects like Breast Enlargement and Tenderness.
