Read steps 1,2,3,4 on this link...
http://www.hairlosstalk.com/research/men/index.htm
The best proven treatments are all on this link... http://www.hairlosstalk.com/research/men/step4men.htm

You should probably spend some time learning about possible side effects of finasteride, if you are considering it.

In general you need to block production of DHT... the easiest/most convenient and studied way is finasteride. You can get finasteride 5mg and cut them in 1/4 to save on cost, taking one each day (read about and understand possible side effects before buying)... You can get it online at http://www.unitedpharmacies.com/ or thru your physician. If you dont want to go with a pill some people have tried to block DHT with topical spironolactone, azelaic acid, and other meds but they arent nearly as convenient or proven. Others dont address DHT first and skip to minoxidil, addressing DHT later.

Inflammation is another issue. Most people here use nizoral 2% shampoo three times a week for its anti-inflammatory and anti-androgen properties. 1% is over the counter. 2% is online or with Rx.

You might give the above treatments 6-12 months then reasses and consider adding a growth stimulator... The most proven one is minoxidil (rogaine) which is over the counter and needs to be used twice a day for proven results, forever, or benefit is lost. It is greasy but easily available. Dr. Lee's has more tollerable but less affordable minoxidil formulations online if you want to try this (I like them) http://www.minoxidil.com . Another stimulator (less proven) is tricomin which is a cool blue tingley spray.

Do some research and start something and reassess in 6-12 months.

Regarding obsession and emotional problems cutting your hair shorter may help take your mind off it, and starting some treatment may help also. But, if you have a lot of issues, seeing your doctor is reasonable, for evaluation and possible referral or treatment. That might help your level of stress, overall health and (not incidentally) hair. Hair loss can be upsetting, but it is not a disease or illness to the extent that it will not kill you.

thanks for the reply !! well im just not sure what i should do..i just started taking Strattera for my add, so hopefully my stress will go away and the worries as well. Ive noticed that when i put in american crew pomade you cant tell at all my hair is thinning so its hard to tell if i am balding but when dry my hair is now extremley soft. Do you think it could be from the stress and emotional problems?? is there anyone that can answer that question because im even getting patches of grey hair im only 21. Please reply again i really appreciate it!

Well, male pattern baldness usually (but not always) follows a pattern... beginning sometime after puberty, with progressive minaturization of hair shaft size, then recession in a typical pattern (see the infamous norwood chart for that pattern... http://www.hairlosspatientguide.com/ima ... 0chart.gif

Another cause of hairloss is teleogen effluvium, which is a diffuse non-scaring shed (not really in a pattern, just generalized thinning) which may be triggered by a serious illness, stress, medication, weight loss or other cause. It usually regrows. See this link... http://www.hairlosstalk.com/research/al ... luvium.htm

Some people seem to get both at once... sudden thinning with male-pattern traits (maybe thinner at temples and top).

If your pattern and/or family history suggest male pattern baldness it is reasonable to start treatment. If you are not really sure of the cause or significance of your hair loss you might see a dermatologist or your physician, as the decision to begin treatment is really a lifelong commitment (you want to be correct). Just be aware that some physicians may not see male pattern balding as a treatable condition (unaware of treatments), may shrug it off as unimportant, or may not know much about it. Look for a good doctor you can talk to and hear what they have to say... But, dont wait for the dreaded "horseshoe" pattern to start treatment... Once you know what's going on it is far easier and cheaper to try to maintain what you have than to try to regrow hair.

regarding the marijuana and weight gain, without a change in lifestyle you will get another 50 pounds every 2 years at that rate... Taking care of yourself (walking, diet, mental health) can only help. As in hair loss, weight maintenence is far easier than weight loss.. Dont gain the next 50 pounds! Excess fat and calories (western diet) seems to increase testosterone and hair loss. Crash/fad diets may also cause hair loss, so you are better off eating a reasonable healthy diet and exercising more.

The fact that you were recently an athelete could be a big help... you know how to sweat and train. But, dont push it too hard at first (you are now "big boned : ) ". Its better to find something you enjoy and will continue than to push too hard.

Good luck
