I am posting this a tad bit early, but decided to, as I just recently went over a "cosmetic" hump with my treatments and wanted to go ahead and share it, providing encouragement.
Background:
History: 34 years old. Been thinning since about 27. Always had short, blond hair. Never too thick, but nice. My hair looks very similar to Gunner's (which means I am bald I guess). Had early signs of bald spot coming on, with thinning on the sides of the vertex. Would have soon had the horseshoe with an "island" of hair up front.
I shaved my head with a razor for about four years, five years, consistently, since late 2000. Got on this site back then (I believe it was 2000, VERY early, under another log-on which I cannot recall) and ordered Merck finasteride. Was on 5 weeks, had watery jizz, lack of sex drive, etc. I was about 29 then. Stopped and just shaved my head until recently (see below).
I keep my hair short/buzzed now (ala Beckham, Brad Pitt, etc). Looks good. I always had the head shape for shaving it, and was lucky, I am athletic and very well built...able to pick up women even with a shaved head, but I believe I look bettter with hair.
Treatments:
minoxidil: since Sept. 2003.
Results: Excellent thickening, some regrowth. The stuff works. Two applications a day (sometimes only one, sometimes three, sometime I didn't do one if I was tied up with sports, etc). Just make sure you consistently do it 2x a day or so, over a week.
Sides: None
finasteride: Both generic and genuine Merck since July 2004. One two-month break, but back to a consisiten 1mg to 2 mg dosage since Jan 1, 2005. Basically one year of use with slight interruption.
Results: Outstanding ! Hair has thickened up, horseshoe pattern disappearing EVERY SINGLE WEEK, more and more. Basically, now, I simply have a slight "thinner" area on the very top/crown area. Girlf friend and others (who know of my treatments, which I have no problems sharing) are like "Dude, you don't even look like you had hair loss..it looks normal, let it grow out"
My analysis by looking in the mirror is the same. The treatments work.
Sides: It SEEMS sometimes like I have less sex drive, but then I am 34. Used to go 2-4 times a day (5 times on weekend)...but my g/f kids me because she is like "you always say your drive might be down,but we have great sex all the time" (usually once a day). Erections have been no problem. I could swear I have a little less sensation down there, but I also have to admit, my current G/f is not "shaped" the same as some other women (ok, let me be honest, her vagina is not as tight...different women have different shaped vaginas and the passage can feel differently in different positions). Sorry to be so graphic but I've been with about 50 women and I conclude that how turned on you are, their shape, size, etc..matters MUCH MORE than finasteride usage. I have experimented with everything from 1/2mg a day , to 1/2 mg once in the morning, once at nite, to 1mg at nite, to 2mgs spread out, to 2.5 a day. I have not done any of them too long term (other than 1mg to 2mgs) but to be honest, I apparently am one of those that the dose doesn't seem to really effect much.
ODDLY, it did when I started it back at 29. For some reason, it really didn't this time. I noticed a slightly harder c*** in the very beginning, probably from the increased blood flow.
I have no idea if this is the reason, but I have gained even MORE muscle mass on finasteride. I work out, total body workouts, every three days (HIT routine). I am well-developed with almost no fat. I already was someone like that, but I could swear, being on finasteride, with the increased testosterone, has helped.
I have never developed b**ch tits.
My prediction: Continued use, until my hair looks 100 percent healthy. I still had a good "donor" area on my crown, for lack of a better term. I had small, dying hairs everywhere, so unlike some of my brethren here, I probably had a better chance of those thickening up and going back to normal. If you look at my head, there are hairs everywhere. THat is why I think, given another 6 months of use, I will look like I did at 25. I have hair everywhere, and finasteride reverses the dying trend.
Basically, until my hairs continue to be too sensitive to DHT, I believe finasteride and minoxidil will keep working.
My advice to anyone just starting to thin is, GET ON finasteride NOW ! I do not suggest minoxidil. I think DHT is the culprit. Just get on finasteride and use Nizoral (I use it M-W-F each week). I use Head and Shoulders the other days.
I love my blond hair, but fortunately, I already know what I will look like completely bald, and it's not bad. Given that this stuff works, if it ever stops, or I develop sides, I can quit. My view is, since it is SO cheap (generic), and I have no sides, hell, why not use it for a few years.
My hair is short and buzzed. I think having a "shadow" of hair actually makes ALL the difference for the face. It frame the face. Especially if you have very light skin, as I do (Scots-Irish/Nordic heritage).
Hope this provides encouragement. Sorry for how graphic I am, but I have carefully studied this as far as how it has affected MY body and I am convinced that finasteride is SAFE and EFFECTIVE.
