Study: Sexually explicit films boost Testosterone for 60-90 mins.

I never put much weight in the "masturbation and/or pornography contributes to hair-loss" hypothesis, but I came across a blurb on wikipedia that made me think otherwise.

Here is a paragraph that grabbed me:

Men who watch a sexually explicit movie have an average increase of 35% in testosterone, peaking at 60–90 minutes after the end of the film, but no increase is seen in men who watch sexually neutral films.
[SUP][49][/SUP] Men who watch sexually explicit films also report increased optimism and decreased exhaustion.[SUP][50][/SUP] Previous research has found a link between relaxation following sexual arousal and testosterone levels.[SUP][51]

[/SUP]
Here is the abstract from citation [50]

Plasma testosterone was measured every 15 min for 3 1/2 hr in eight male subjects before, during, and after the showing of a sexually explicit movie. There was an average increase of 35% in testosterone. The maximum concentration was observed 60–90 min after the end of the film. No increase was found in eight control subjects who saw a sexually neutral film.

So, if you are regularly viewing sexually explicit material, you would hypothetically be boosting your testosterone levels by 35% (assuming there is no sort of resistance developed).

That being said,
would these temporary increases in Testosterone be accompanied by equivalent increases in DHT? And if so, could that increases cause bouts of shedding?

My personal anecdote/confession:
I am a p**rn or sex addict. While I have regular sex in a monogamous relationship (~2 times a week), I usually watch 7+ hours of pornography a week, ejaculating roughly 7 times as well. Occasionally, I will spend an entire day or weekend watching p**rn and masturbating (8+ hours), with some recreational use of marijuana mixed in. Following days like these, I notice significant shedding, much more than the typical day. However, factors like lack of exercise, diet, and sleep on those days are confounding variables.

I always dismissed these sheds as part of my imagination, but now I am wondering if that is the case.

Anyways, I am quitting p**rn and masturbation for good, and will observe my hairline going forward. I will update this thread as things progress, as well as adding pictures.

...hmmmmm....very interesting...but might be a stretch....

...my dad is cue-ball bald...never watched a day of p**rn in his life...has never been a "guys guy" when it comes to women and talking about sex -- grew up in a strict catholic household and he still is a prud bigtime...but he drank quite a bit..

....however, this may hold water with those who are on the edge of DHT sensitivity...not everyone is the same and this COULD be a contributor for some men...but it doesn't account for male pattern baldness across the board...

the thing about Testosterone/DHT relationship -- when men age, their testosterone level's drop, so why do they still lose their hair with old age???

....my guess is there's something else that factors into DHT production...

I dont know about that or even if that amount of time would even make any difference, but I do think T is important in male pattern baldness. Its not just DHT because T is an androgen also and much more abundant than DHT so if hair is sensitive to androgens it cant just be DHT.

T is converted into DHT. If T levels are elevated a priori, then they usually also result in higher DHT levels.

So why do men lose their hair in later years when T levels are dropping below that which they were when they had hair earlier in life??

Hair growth is a product of two opposite forces, the negative one, as we know, is androgenic alopecia/DHT/whichever theory you prefer, the other one -- the vitality of you body. The hair doesn't grow as vigorously as it did when you were young for the same reason your skin gets wrinkly etc. So that positive factor declines with age

Plus DHT conversion increases with age -- or so I've heard

Sexual arousal is a form of (good) stress -- cortisol levels increase as well.

I dont buy the vitality of your body as you age part. There are guys that are 50 years old with 18 year old Norwood 0 hair lines. Certainly not many, but even one is proof thats not true because aging cant skip someone. I will say we certainly dont understand why as most men age they go bald, but some men clearly do not so there is some reason besides aging or ever man would be affected. I think male pattern baldness is solely androgens, and changing sensitivities to those androgens as you age in those genetically susceptible. I dont think at this level its any more complex than this if you look at it where androgens enter the whole picture because male pattern baldness is clearly complicated overall.

Even when you look at a woman and think of sex your test rises.
I don't believe that watching p**rn will make your hair fall out.

Another study also says 20 pints a day will lower your test with 50%. You can also stop DHT by becoming fat, your belly fat will destroy most of your test and DHT.

I hope we have something a little better for dealing with this then resorting to getting fat.
