When I was 18 I went to the local GP to try and get finasteride prescribed, he was extremely cold and pretty much shouted me out of the room for asking for drugs to try and solve an 'aesthetic issue' as balding doesn't provide any medical negatives. I pretty much spent 2 years convincing myself that finasteride wasn't for me since if the doctor refused to prescribed it then it must be pretty bad right?
Fast forward 2 years, I've been on finasteride for about 7 months now and I went to see the same doctor for a burn I picked up and he prescribed me some penicillin, naturally he looked at what meds I was on to see if they conflicted
He then said "Hmm.. it says you're on finasteride?"
I figuratively shat my pants, I thought he was going to lecture me about how silly I am taking the drug for hairloss - mind you he's about 55 and he has a norwood 1 hairline, he'd probably never understand the scourge of hairloss
I just looked down at the floor and replied "Yeah"
He asked me why I was on it and said to me "You know it's a prostate drug?" and I answered that I've researched the drug and I understand it
after that he pretty much just asked if I'm still taking the privately prescribed finasteride from a 'private doctor' (I just bought it off the internet and filled out a questionnaire for the prescription)
He just replied happily "Ok, thats completely fine!"
So damn annoying because the guy was furious that I went to try and get drugs for hairloss and because I got a prescription privately and not through the NHS he's contempt with it, no lecture, no nothing.
Perhaps he meant it's fine to take finasteride with antibiotics but his tone was pretty serious I thought he was going to seriously question my actions. I suppose there's nothing he can do since I got it from a different doctor, I wish GP's in the UK would just understand that balding can cause serious anxiety issues and it can reduce ones quality of life. Just because it's solely an aesthetic issue doesn't mean it's an issue that impacts millions of mens lifes negatively worldwide
Bit of a rant but bottom line: if you're from the UK like me and you want finasteride, just buy it online, it's a lot less hassle and you don't even have to see a GP to get it online
