Steroid induced hair loss (cortisol)

Hi, new female here.

I had a surgery to remove an adrenal tumor and now I am deficient in hormones produced by the adrenal gland. Immediately following surgery, I was given massive doses of replacement steroid (hydrocortisone/Cortef) for a few days and then tapered down to a physiological dose of 15mg. This therapy will continue until I can be weaned off the medication in a few months. Does anyone have experience with steroid induced hair loss, in particular hydrocortisone? Does this steroid actually cause hair loss? I have been told that a physiological dose of 15mg should not impede or induce any more hair loss, but I am shedding increasingly. It has been only a month since surgery, but I am wondering if I will continue to loose hair even on a low dose until I am indefinitely off the medication or was this increase in shed induced by the high amounts given to me following surgery. Any experience or knowledge?

Thank you.

Sorry Holly it's not the sort of thing we come across. :(

I think the best thing to do is just stick it out, as you have no choice but to take the replacement steroid?

Once you have finished taking the steroids your hair should return back to "normal." :)

I know about that site already. No one there has steroid experience or knowledge.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Go to the forum

click the search field

type in steroid in the "Search for Keywords:" field

I find "Search found 132 matches"

I am sure not all relate to you but I am sure many of the matches should fit your needs. You just have to get used to digging around forums. They can be frustrating but once you get used to how they work you can typically find what you need. Good luck
