I’m 38 now, but I first started noticing my hair thinning when I was around 23. Like a lot of guys on this forum, I went down the rabbit hole trying just about everything to stop it. I tried hair fibers, Minoxidil, Finasteride, laser therapy (LLLT), different supplements, special shampoos, lifestyle changes, and even PRP treatments. I really wanted something to work, but over the years my hairline kept receding and my confidence definitely took a hit.
Eventually I started seriously looking into hair transplants. I visited a few clinics and also made a point to talk with guys who had already gone through the procedure. Some had decent results, but a lot of the feedback I got was mixed. A few guys told me they were still unhappy with the density on top, and others had noticeable scarring in the donor area. Even when a hairline was rebuilt, the crown could still look thin. At that point I was probably around a Norwood 4 or 5, and I started realizing a transplant might not give me the natural look I was hoping for. I couldn’t justify spending that kind of money, even if I went overseas.
Around 2015 I came across something called Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP). At first I honestly thought it sounded a little strange. A tattoo on your scalp? But the more I researched it, the more it made sense. I spent months looking into different clinics and results before finally deciding to try it in 2016.
For me, it completely changed things.
Instead of looking like I was losing my hair, it looks like I simply choose to shave my head and keep a clean hairline. That subtle difference made a huge impact psychologically. I stopped worrying about my hairline every time I walked past a mirror or saw photos of myself. It was the first time in years that I actually felt comfortable with how I looked again.
Another thing I liked about SMP is that it doesn’t close the door on future options. If I ever decided to get a hair transplant down the road, SMP can actually work alongside it by adding the appearance of density. I’ve spoken with a number of guys who have done both and they’re very happy with the combination.
After seeing how much SMP helped me personally, I ended up getting trained and eventually started Delaware Scalp Micropigmentation. My goal now is simply to help other people who are dealing with the same confidence issues that hair loss can cause.
NOTE: I just want to say this upfront because I feel like I might get some backlash. I’m not here to sell anything or promote my business or anyone else’s. I’m just another bald guy talking to other guys who are going through the same thing I went through. I know how it feels. I simply want to share my story and be honest and transparent about my hair loss journey and how scalp micropigmentation changed my life.
Below is a before and after photo of my own SMP results. I originally had my SMP Procedure done by Jon Gerow in NYC.
If anyone has questions about SMP, feel free to ask. I know how frustrating hair loss can be, and I’m always happy to share my experience.
Before SMP 2016
SMP Healed after 10 years (I've had around 11-13 sessions of SMP in 10 years because of Touch Ups and hairline alterations and I have zero regrets.)
