Hi, I have some concerns regarding splitting 5mg finasteride and hope someone can help?

I started taking finasteride (1mg finax) daily, in march 2010 until about amonth ago when my finasteride supply ran out...unitedpharmacies had stopped stocking it, which sucked cos I had good results after 3 years...so I switched to Finpecia 1mg for a week or so before finally getting a private prescription from a doctor for 5mg finasteride made by almus, which amazingly cost only £5.80 for 3 boxes of 28 tablets...so almost a year supply after spltting into quarters!

So I've been taking 1.25mg finasteride for over a week now and noticed my libido has increased (more frequent morning wood etc) which I guess is not a bad thing lol..but I'm concerned whether splitting the 5mg tablet into quarters is working...

The tablet splits nice and evenly in the pill splitter, without any crumbling, but is it possible that the finasteride isn't evenly distributed through-out the pill? So like 1 half could contain 4mg, the other only 1mg, the rest filler?

Also, finasteride tablets are film coated right (maybe time released?) so ofcourse after splitting the pill the insides of the quarters are no longer film coat protected, so maybe the finasteride loses its potency/effect before it reaches it's target :/

I have no doubt the finasteride is legit because it's from a local pharmacy, so maybe i'm overthinking things.. maybe the increased libido may be down to working out hard recently with weights...although I hope someone with more experience of splitting 5mg finasteride can put my mind at ease with these questions...thanks :dunno:

I split the pill into quarters and then one of the quarters again in half to make 5 segments. It doesn't matter if the dose is slightly more or less than 1mg - the same amount of DHT is suppressed from about 0.5mg upwards

I've heard people speculate about this before but it sounds like paranoia to me. Only someone with detailed knowledge of the manufacturing process could answer that.

I doubt leaving a segment for a few days will lose its potency. I keep my segments in a small airtight plastic container. But only someone with a lot of knowledge of pharmaceuticals would be able to say definitively. You could even write to the manufacturer and ask them both questions- I'd be interested to hear what they say.

No. Pills are manufactured in bulk by the thousands. The active ingredient would have to be evenly distributed or else it could not be guaranteed that each pill contains 5 mg. Anything you have heard to the contrary is just typical internet paranoia/misinformation.

ok cheers guys, i guess the side effects associated with finasteride are 90% just in the head, like psychological/placebo effect, so it's easy to become paranoid.

i've looked at the package leaflet which came in the box of almus finasteride and their contact info is actually down as 'dr reddy's laboratries uk' so the same manufacturer as the 1mg finax made in India...spooky lol. gonna give them a ring tomorrow just to make sure :)

ok, I think you doubt the potency of finasteride because you are getting high libido and that makes you suspicious. I think what might be happening is that you just started finasteride, and now you have excessive T floating that would have been otherwise converted to dht in absence of finasteride. Increased T in turn gives you higher libido. That should change soon when your body acclimates itself and balances the T levels through other mechanisms. This is purely my theory, though
