Nobody knows for sure if it works. My opinion is ... it doesn´t, but many consider it does.
About the sides don´t worry. There are virtualy no sides but I don´t know for sure if there still is a chance to get them.
By the way that may be the reason why it doesn´t work .. Because it gets metabolized very quickly, not getting sufficient time to work in the folicle.

This guy seems to have regrown quite a bit of his hair using spironolactone (solution not cream) and minoxidil.
