Hey guys, I'm a 29 year old female and I've lost about 40% of my hair this year.
I don't know if it's Telogen Effluvium or Androgenetic Alopecia. Given my significant iron and Vitamin D deficiency (ferritin was 6.7) and slight hormonal imbalance (elevated total testosterone, free testosterone and DHEA-S in range,) it could be Telogen Effluvium. I also lost some weight pretty quickly at the end of last year by severely limiting my daily caloric intake (I was already thin and became thinner.) It's also possible that it's Androgenetic Alopecia or started as Telogen Effluvium which then triggered Androgenetic Alopecia (evidently, this happens.) I didn't think that Androgenetic Alopecia progressed this quickly, but I'm starting to suspect I have it because I'm shedding lots of short, miniaturized hairs.
I've been on Spironolactone for about a month now, going on it in the hopes it would help my hair loss and acne. In the last week I've gone up to 100 mg (actually 75 mg, but I also started taking the birth control pill Yaz on the same day, which allegedly contains 25 mg Spironolactone.)
I've noticed over the last few days that I'm shedding tons of short hairs of varying lengths between 1-5 inches (my actual hair is at least 12 inches long.) I found one that was literally 1/2 inch. They also appear "miniaturized." I've read that miniaturization can also happen with Telogen Effluvium.
I've also been diagnosed with "mild" seborrheic dermatitis, and have a slightly itchy scalp.
Do you think the spironolactone is inducing this shed? Why is it that starting an anti androgen induces a shed? Any other comments/suggestions? What else can I do? I'm so depressed and worried, I can't take it anymore.
Thanks.
