I'm a female with thinning in the frontal hairline and sparse thinning all over.
My dermatologist put me on 100mg 2X a day. Is this recommended? Is this too much at first? I have been on this for about a month. I feel like it was better the first 2 weeks and then declined. I see little hairs in my frontal hairline and its hard to tell if they are new hairs or thinning hairs. Could what I am taking cause things to get worse before better. My derm said she wanted me to try it for 6 months. I also am having these weird scalp sensations which makes me think something is happening chemically. I would hate if this could make my hair worse. Maybe I need to hang in there. Any input?

gina oral spironolactone is good for women.
there are some crazy men who take 200 or 100 mg of spironolactone.

I couldn't convince my wife to take oral spironolactone. If I were a women with thinning hairs, I would be on oral spironolactone, nizoral shampoo, proxiphen-N and/or tricomin. That should do the trick if you catch it early.

Cheryl Baker from an old pop group "Bucks Fizz" and the BBC's "Record Breakers" advertises a product for women's thinning hair which contains shark cartilage (though the company mysteriously calls it a Marine Product). It could be a load of old twaddle, or maybe extra idodine can help some conditions. Good luck in your research.

Hang in there

Gina I am not a doctor, so I cannot advice you on the best dosage, but your Dermatologist was correct in advising you to hang in there for at least 6months. If you have some spare time read through some of the discussion forums here, definitely those relating to shedding. Check out this pose created by Cassin http://www.hairlosstalk.com/discussions ... hp?t=12865

As he explains, almost every successful treatment for hair loss involves shedding. Depending on the individual, some people will experience more shedding than others. It is really important that you do not freak out and stop taking the medication.

I wish I could advise you more on your regime but I haven’t read that much on treatments for women. However, if I were you I would have another conversation with your Dermatologist about possibly combining multiple treatments.

You have not mentioned the cause for your hairloss in your post. I am assuming that it is most likely due to DHT\T as you are using spironolactone. spironolactone should be affective at preventing further damage while also aiding in re-growth. If you have already lost a decent amount of hair, than perhaps you could add products like minoxidil (Rogaine has a version for women), and Tricomin. This would help speed up your re-growth.

Attacking hairloss in multiple ways seems to be a common trend among those people who have had success in battling hairloss.

If I were you, I would definitely consult your Dermatologist before making any changes.

Thanks for the link to Cassin's shedding sticky. This includes reference to a view I was criticised for expressing some time ago, which is that the follicle might be an "organ" in its own right.

I read many places that women respond much better to minoxidil 2% than men do to minoxidil 5%. I think I read that women respond better to minoxidil 2% than men respond to minoxidil 5% combined with propecia.

I would also say, stick with the spironolactone, as it takes at least 6 months to a year to see any good results from any treatment. I would also recommend you visit this sister site http://www.heralopecia.com/ which is more focused on female pattern baldness.
