SPERM COUNT TEST AFTER DUSTASTERIDE

My partner had been taking dustasteride for 6months and propecia for two years previous. He has his sperm count test and found that there was only 17 sperms in a 200 sperm area on the test. Many of which were struggling to swim.

Then despite this I have become pregnant. The docter says from his basic info that dustasteride doesnt effect the DNA of sperm, but if the drug can kill the sperms to his point in some people, it suggests this could have severe effects on the body/baby generally.

How many women have had okay babies after conceiving when their bloke was on it?

Is there any research on this?

thankyou

there have not been any research on this, because it wouldnt be leagal to put a life on risk.. therfore no such test groups, and i dont think many wimen would walenter in these test groups if its to se if a drug hurts their baby.
So they really dont know if it does any damage, they think it can have an effect on the growth of the male penis and sexual systems if the baby is a boy. but thats just a chanse.
I would sugest that if you are going to have sex again, that he uses a condom.

gl and hope that the doctors speculations are wrong.

This sounds very interesting, and, although i hope that everything turns out good for you, i would like to hear the opinions of posters with further scientific knowledge like Bryan or michael barry.

Once the spermatozoon has done its job penetrating the ovum, how can dutasteride or finasteride affect the gastrulation or other cellular events if they don' t affect the structure of the single spermatozoon?

How do we know that they don't affect the individual sperms genetic make-up?

Effects of PNU157706, a dual 5alpha-reductase inhibitor, on rat epididymal sperm maturation and fertility.

Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Sperm entering the epididymis gain progressive motility and fertilizing ability in a process termed maturation. The functional dependence of the epididymis on dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is well established, yet few studies have examined the consequences on the epididymis of inhibiting DHT formation. We have shown that inhibition of both isoforms of 5alpha-reductase (types 1 and 2), the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, has pronounced effects on epididymal gene expression. In the present study, we investigate whether inhibiting 5alpha-reductase has consequences on epididymal sperm maturation. Rats were treated with vehicle or 10 mg/kg/day PNU157706, a dual-type inhibitor, for 28 days. Fertility and several key facets of sperm maturation were analyzed. Changes in sperm motility were assessed by computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). Changes in sperm morphology were assessed by CASA and electron microscopy. The motility of spermatozoa from the cauda epididymidis of treated animals showed a significant decrease in both the percentage of motile and progressively motile sperm as well as altered motion parameters. The morphology of cauda epididymal spermatozoa was also adversely affected by the treatment; the most prominent effect was a markedly elevated proportion of sperm that retained their cytoplasmic droplet. Matings with treated males resulted in fewer successful pregnancies and a higher rate of preimplantation loss. Progeny outcome was unaffected. The compromised sperm motility and morphology likely contribute to the subfertility of inhibitor-treated rats. Our results indicate a role for dual 5alpha-reductase inhibitors in further studies of epididymal physiology and as a potential component of a male contraceptive.

fertility was effected in terms of sperm count and motility but they said that "Progeny outcome was unaffected" so there weren't any mutant babies.

The way nature works is that the strong sperm make it while the weak die off. As for continued sex during the pregnancy and it effecting anything. that hasn't been seen but they do warn against taking these meds and women that are already pregnant. Probably because you pass some of it with the fluid transfer and it will effect womens hormones.
