is it

a) hairs currently growing will get used to minoxidil and then change to require it to grow

or
b) only new growing hairs from rogaine are what they call "dependent hairs"

tough question

and i dont think you can get an straight answer with this one

some speculate that only "regrown" hair are dependent on continuous use of minoxidil
and will fall out/miniaturize after discontinuing use

others say that other "native existing hair" will become dependent on using minoxidil aswell
meaning if you were to quit
you would loose more hair than if you would have never started minoxidil

does that make sense

my personal opinion is that obviously any regrown hair with minoxidil is dependent on it's use
i also think your other native hair gets used to the vasodilating properties of minoxidil and may get shocked if minoxidil is discontinued

from first hand experience i happen to think minoxidil makes your hair very dependant on it. i think if you stop you can lose even more hair than you "gained" which is risky business.

Think about it. Hair follicles get used to minoxidil. Take it away and its very possible that they completely bolt even if they wouldnt have bolted so quick alone.

How do you know for sure how much hair would you lose if you did not take minoxidil over this time. Maybe the hair that you lost when you stoped minoxidil would be gone anyway.

Exactly - its all speculation. I do think it makes sense though that hair that didn't really need it as much still became dependant on it and then when being starved of it made it wrong than it would have been. The logic is there.

As i said - speculation. Clearly minoxidil was doing more for me than i thought - more as a maintainer than a regrowth though

Sure, but then you get it back after a few more weeks, according to that 1999 study by Vera Price.

I remember reading that study. Also, I remember reading a post about a guy who quit minoxidil and went through a big shed but after a few months a lot of hair that he shed grew back.

Yes without the monox. The hair that you shed while on minoxidil don't necessarily have to be dependent on minoxidil. Most likely you will lose the hair that you gained by using minoxidil.

Well.. I think I know how to answer this best:

Im a diffuse thinner

Before starting minoxidil.. my hair was at 60%

6 months after starting I grew to 80% I stopped

My hair then dropped to about 35%

It never grew back.

I restarted minoxidil... my hair came back to about 75%

It went back to where they _would_ have been, had they never used the minoxidil in the first place.

Not for me it didnt Bryan.. and I dont think I would have lost that 30% in 6 months time.

^ likewise

IMO if your hair follicles get accustomed to minoxidil, when you stop there's a good chance they'll be worse off than they otherwise would be. Makes sense to me. The body is a funny thing - once it gets reliant on something it does crap like this when you later stave it off this stuff

yes, you may shed a lot of hair when you stop minoxidil but after a couple of months some of the hair you shed will grow back. Bryan is correct
