I got a haircut today and saw the back of my head for the first time in quite a while. Now, I am worried I am losing hair on my crown. I asked my barber and he said no. I am not the paranoid type but I have to be honest here I am freaking out a little bit at the thought of balding (sorry guys, the struggle is real). Can you guys take a look and give me your thoughts?

I don't have a receding hair line and I don't notice any thinning anywhere else, just the crown (I shouldn't say thinning but rather "thinner" than the rest of my head). I can't say for certain how my hair was on my crown prior to this because I never noticed or even thought of the possibility (I've always had thick, curly hair).

Hey man, I know the feeling, it sucks.

The harsh reality if that you have definite crown thinning at this point, but your hairline is perfect. Now is the time for you to take low dose finasteride and hold it that way. It still looks great so it’s just a matter of maintenance.

Thanks for the quick reply. C'est la vie I guess.

Is finasteride the best option or minoxidil/nanoxidil? From the little research I've done I have heard minoxidil works best on the crown. Do either of these work if I go on a regiment of 6-12 months and stop at some point? I am uneasy with taking something for the rest of my life, especially something with well-known adverse side effects.

In other news, my friend George told me the Hair Restoration Clinic in Beijing has produced a cure :D

No problem man! You could definitely use minoxidil foam on the crown, but since you have slight diffuse thinning it may be harder for the product to reach the scalp. I would trust the science behind finasteride and the safety profile behind it. I myself take finasteride and Dutasteride and have no side effects to speak of. You can start with 0.25 mg of finasteride and work your way up to the full dose if you want to (even though .25 is almost as effective as 1mg).

Both minoxidil and finasteride are long term treatments and not cures, so you’d have to stick with them. Based on how your hair is right now, I’d probably skip the minoxidil, take 0.5 mg finasteride daily, and use 2% nizoral two times a week to ensure a healthy scalp.

You’re lucky in that you caught it super super early and with medical intervention you can probably keep what you have at least for the next 10 years or more.

This one is actually hard to say. We dont have any pics of what your hair looked like before. Also you are 28 so it isnt uncommon to start thinning now but it doesnt mean you will go bald in the near future. Based off what i'm seeing right now if I were you I would only use rogaine/minoxidil. If you do have a strong family history of balding (ie lots of nw6-7s in family) then I would get on finasteride.
