Kelly slater is an aquaintence of mine, via some friends who are in his band "The Surfers". Namely Peter King and Rob Machado. About 3 years ago he started thinning like mad, and I actually got a phone call from Peter about the very topic. He pointed out that Kelly had just decided to deal with it by shaving his head to try and make it less noticeable. It's pretty much the topic of everyones conversations re: him here in San Diego, but at the same time, he is too big of a name for anyone to really criticize him for it.

He's still in that phase where he can actually, almost completely reverse it with minoxidil and Propecia, but I don't know if he is willing to put the effort into it. I think he most likely considers it a bit of a nuisance to deal with. There's no doubt he's taking it as a hit to his appearance though, and is concerned. Its affecting his appearance in a big way. And yes, he still does have sex with Pamela Anderson once in awhile, when she's in the mood. So I'm told.

Really interesting. I have the same type of hairloss as him, and judging the rate at which he lost his hair, I have about the same agressiveness. I dont know if he could completely reverse it. I think he could probably stop things or improve them slightly, but in my first 6 months, I haven't even put a dent into the rate at which i'm thinning.

His best bet is an hair transplant and since he goes to Australia allot to surf I would get it done by Woods. Then again he doesnt seem to care to much.

1. 6 months isnt long enough. I didn't see a dent by then either
2. Hate to sound like a broken record but I haven't heard of anyone do anything other than shed while on saw palmetto, in the 5 years i've run this site, aside from this guy kalika and stingray. I wouldn't even be on it at all.
3. We don't know exactly when he started losing his hair so we can't know how aggressive nor the rate at which he has been losing it.
4. Every person is different, so Kelly could respond quite well like most people do, after a year on Propecia/minoxidil. His chances of success are entirely related to the clinical trials, not really to a particular person who may also be on the regimen with similar hair loss. You need way more people than just 1 to do an accurate assessment of how good of a chance he has. Guys with hair loss like his almost make me want to run up to them and tell them "If you JUST got on such and such right now, you could almost completely reverse that in 2 years, do you know that?" They are the best candidates for seeing great results in my opinion.

Well, I hope so. I have the same thinning and I would love to see a complete reversal. The second two pictures were spaced out over about 1.5 years. So that's where I assumed his thinning rate.

I'm not discrediting anything I've done so far. I'm saying that after 6 months on minoxidil, I know it isn't regrowing anything or keeping things around. I say this because of my hair quality, not in my appearance. Hopefully Finasteride will make a dent 6 months down the road, but for right now, I would consider myself a non-responder to minoxidil. That's why i have little faith in a full reversal.

ps. are you saying that saw p might actually CONTRIBUTE to hairloss?

I think tony hawk the scateboarder is on his way down in the hair department also. Will try and find some pics... Saw him recently at a benefit in LA.

there are plenty of bald professional skaters out there, but i'm sure there are loads of bald professional surfers out there too. but i think tony hawk is in his mid 30s now, maybe early 30s at the most where slater has to be in his late 20s at the most.

Kelly has been thinning for years....I remember walking by an Enquirer at the supermarket in 1998 (or when he was on Baywatch) and checking out the pic of Kelly and Pam and the article said Pam wanted to have him do something about his hair which "was thinning". Loss appeared fairly severe, as far as stars go, then.

Man you guys are harsh. Kelly is still a good looking guy even with his hairloss. Yes, he was a lot better looking when he was like 23 but now at like maybe 32 he still looks good.

He just transitioned from his young 20's young man phase to his early 30's phase.

Plus look at his hair. He really doesnt have any loss just thinning. His hairline is still pretty good. I completely agree with HairLossTalk.com on this one. He would be a real good responder if he just did something about his hair in my opinion.

If you think about it he would look good if he just used topik.

Ohh wait, I looked at his 2nd picture that bombscience posted and came to this conclusion:

He started thinning for about a couple years but he had no hair loss. If he did something about it right away he would been sitting with great hair right now.

But when I looked at his 3rd picture he thinned even more and is now receding. He lost some hair. He is probley like a NW1 or a NW2 hard to tell in that picture. But he has bad thinning (obvously).

If he where to treat his hair right now he could still get good results and maybe be like a NW1 with average to good density if he got on propecia and minoxidil. He is still in a postition to fix his hair.

Poor guy, he went from surf hunk to balding guy that hang out at the beach too much. Always a shame when the pretty boys go bald, it just looks awkward.

I was at a bar tonight, and looking around, almost nobody wasn't losing hair. The crowd was 20s - 40s. Even those with almost a full set, you could notice some temporal recession which was no doubt a sign of things to come. Only one guy (probably around 50) was completely untouched - lucky bastard.

I wish I could look at people like I used to instead of checking people like another statistic : 'norwood 3, norwood 2, norwood 5...'

It's said that ~30% of men aren't afflicted by male pattern baldness. Based on what I see, I find that hard to believe.

It's funny how the tables turn as well. I had a friend mention to me I was "losing the battle" on top a little, and this began my fixation on fighting my hairloss a year ago. I noticed the other day that now that same buddy is experiencing the first stages of thinning a year later. Man, it just shows how quick things change. I mean I went from having sweet thick blonde hair to noticeably thin in about 12 months. I also noticed another friend at work who has thinned out a bit too in the last 8-10 months. I would say, not including me, that about 4 of us guys within our group of friends are now experiencing male pattern baldness.

I think if every bald or balding person pools their money we can buy Iraq boot out the locals and turn it into a bald man's paradise where you must be thinning to live there. Then we just have to relocate all the p**rn stars and former Playboy, Penthouse, Huslter, and for any one that likes black women, Black Tail models there and we will be set.
