I wrote this to a newby asking some question and figured I'd post it to help explain shedding and what medications to use as simply as it can be stated. If any experienced users would like to add or correct me please do.
-You don't seem to know much about hair loss and the medications. That is okay... I didn't know anything at first and dropped money on all sorts of scams.
First off if a medication is working for you, you will have no idea until about 8-12 months later.
When the hairs on your head fall out from a shed it takes 2-4 months before they begin growing again... so there is absolutely no way you will see positive results until about 3-4 months and anyone that shows pics of results in a shorter time is just showing you the results of them recovering from a natural (seasonal) shed.
Throughout the year your hair will shed... sometimes you will have hair that seems thicker then you've ever had it... and sometimes you will swear that you will be completely bald in a few months time.
Balding is a slow process... and growing hair back is even slower. This is why you see so many bald men everywhere and wonder why they are not doing anything about it.
Tons of guys have "tried" Rogaine... the thing is to really see good results you have to wait a damn long time and go through some severe shedding periods. The thing people don't realize is the more hair falling out... the more thicker, longer hairs will grow in (typically).
Shedding periods occur from finasteride (Propecia) when the hair follicle isn't being attacked by DHT anymore and wants to release that crappy thinning hair and replace it with a thick terminal hair (this is speculation... no science backing this phenomenon... but it does seem logical). The same happens when you use Rogaine which is a hair growth stimulant. The hair follicle releases the thin wispy hair and replaces it with a thicker healthier hair. The problem is that when a hair is released it takes 2-4 months to grow back... so during that period you think your hair is getting worse and worse. Plus during those 4 months while waiting for those hairs to grow back other hairs are falling out all over your head that will slowly be replaced by these thicker hairs as well... so if you do the math.. you aren't going to see a great head of hair for at least 8-12 months if not longer.
During these times you may experience dry scalp or soreness from balding. This happens to many men, especially during the winter season. In my experience using Nizoral 1% 3 times a week (every other day) and leaving it in the scalp for 5-10 minutes at a time completely takes care of that problem after about a month.
To stop the redness and soreness in the scalp I apply 2% liquid spironolactone twice a day rdirectly following my Rogaine Foam application. I buy spironolactone from http://www.minoxidil.com and a bottle lasts me 3 weeks to a month. I can honestly say after a few weeks you will notice a difference in how your scalp feels using spironolactone. spironolactone also prevents DHT from binding to receptors in the hair follicle when applied topically in which ever spot it is applied to. I did not notice any shed while using spironolactone? Not sure why... I did notice that I have a lot less hairs falling out since I've been applying it.
I hope this helps with a lot of common questions and breaks down in simple form what to expect.
