Should I buzz my head?

I'm thinking of buzzing my head but would like to get some opinions before I go for it. I have a receding hairline (Norwood 1.5/2) with diffused thinning about 1/2 around the hairline. The top of my head is fine with no visible thinning...yet. I currently have my hair about 2 inches long with it sticking up on the top and back and pulled forward in the front to cover thinning hairline. I think it's beginning to look bad and people are starting to wonder if I'm going bald - no secret here...I am. I want to buzz it so I don't have to worry about wind or being active. I have dark hair and pale skin so the shorter I go the more apparent the contrast will be. What are your recommendations in terms of buzzing it? should I even do it? what guard should I use?

I was in a similar situation and think giving up long bangs and longer hair was a great and overdue decision... It just doesnt look as good with fine thinning hair, and the length and weight of the hair accents thinning.

If you do try to shave start with the longest blade (1") and allow yourself to get used to the look. Afer playing around I had my best results with the longest blade #8= 1 inch on top, with shorter #4 = 1/2 inch on the sides (kind of marine style). If you want to get fancy you could try leaving the front a little longer and trimming the bangs with scissors (allowing some coverage of temples and frontal thinning areas, as you are now doing with your 2" frontal hair), and could try the taper blade that comes with many shavers for around the ears.

After doing well, as above, for a few months I then got carried away and shaved without a blade : ). That was a shocking change (requiring the growth of some facial hair to compensate : ), but after growing it for 10 days I am now getting coverage again (shadow). It was a true shaved look, and generated a lot of discussion at work. Some disliked it, but a few said I had a "nicely shaped head" which is reassuring, as I now know that I can live with a shaved head if necessary. I will save this option for later, however.
