Do you think it helps keeping the hair on the back and side tight and short whilst longer on the top to make the top look more full? Or would you argue that having somewhat longer hair on the back and sides help by blending in with the top?

Curious to see what people on here think fits better. I used to think that very short hair on the back and sides but now I'm not so sure since experimenting with different haircuts and seeing different kinds of hairstyle with thinning hair.

Ed Sheeran looks greasy and I wouldn't really call his hair "long" nor "thinning" but I don't really keep up with the guy.

Anyway, I think it depends.

If you have a badly receded hairline, hair that goes much past the ears becomes an increasingly terrible option. If you don't have much recession, but you are diffuse thinning on the crown, growing it out a bit isn't so bad because it can hid the diffusion. Just avoid well-lit areas.

Ed Sheeran has been thinning for a while now, also manages to hide his hairline pretty well, I recently seen a video on him blowdrying his hair and his hairline is pushed back pretty far. As for thinning on the crown, I'd agree that longer hair works well, especially when tied back.
