So I took for about 2 years and didn't really see much of a difference and since I was experiencing sides I decided to get off it. I thought I would start shedding like crazy but it's been a year now and if anything my hair got a bit better. Has anyone experienced anything like this and could my hair loss be from something else?
It could but it depends on the type of loss. If you have general thinning at the crown or receding hairline, then it's almost certainly typical Androgenetic Alopecia. If you have diffuse thinning in the pattern hair loss areas , not sides and back, then it's almost certainly Androgenetic Alopecia again, though there's an off chance it's due to thyroid or nutritional deficiency (doubtful). Any other type of loss warrants a visit to a derm.
My experience with finasteride has been somewhat similar to yours. I'm 18 months in on 1 mg daily propecia and have only seen accelerated loss at vertex and hairline. We would fall into the nonresponders bucket it would seem, but I don't buy that vague meaningless statement.
My bro science opinion:
If you've seen your hair loss improve after stopping finasteride then either finasteride was sufficiently f*****g with your hormone balance to hurt you, or your hairloss was due to increased dht from increased T resulting from finasteride use. The increased dht resulting from unaddressed 5ar type 1 at the follicular level (finasteride only inhibits type 2). After stopping finasteride your T levels lowered and the local dht activity at the follicles was reduced showing up as an improvement in your loss. If this is true, then you will probably see this slight improvement taper off. Anyway, just unfounded speculation.
Did you ever check your blood dht levels while in finasteride to confirm it was working for you?
If by year 2 I'm still in the same boat, then I'll quit and begin dutasteride.
