I have been shedding now for 3 weeks I have been on Proscar for 6 weeks and minoxidil for 2 months.

My question is when my hair falls out there is a little bulb thing on the end of it. the hair itsself is still very thick and strong " i have very thick hair"
so what is the little bulb thing and is it bad?

That little 'bulb' marks the end of the hair shaft growth cycle for that hair. It means that the hair you are holding was shed, and not cut, or broken off.

You see, a hair shaft can grow for a few years.. and is only kept at a certain length by regular haircuts. When the hair reaches the end of its hair growth cycle, it sheds. On the bottom of that hair will be a bulb. It means that the follicle that produced that hair is done, and will go into resting state for a few months, and will then once again start work on another hair.

Can't judge too much from it. Sometimes a bulb is just a bulb.

thanx

thats grate thank your for that information, but the fact that all the hair i am shedding has those little bulb things is ok, just seems like a lot of my hair is going to sleep :)
if i keep shedding at this speed i wont have to worry about my hair anymore i wont have any left.

So you are saying that all hairs lost that do not have a white bulb are a result of male pattern baldness and not a result of the treatments?

What I am saying is that hairs that have bulbs on the end are hairs that have reached the end of their growth phase and are entering resting phase. Hairs that don't have bulbs mean that these hairs broke off.

You can't tell anything about your male pattern baldness status from this. People who do not have male pattern baldness will shed hairs with bulbs, and if their hair is brittle, will lose hairs without bulbs. People who DO have male pattern baldness will lose hairs both ways as well.

The difference between the male pattern baldness and non-male pattern baldness person is that on the non-male pattern baldness person, the hair shed with a bulb will be replaced inevitably with a new hair of equal size and thickness. The male pattern baldness person's shed bulb hair will be replaced with a hair of lesser size and thickness.

If the hair came out without a bulb, then it means that the entire hair did not 'fall' out. It means the hairshaft was broken off, and that somewhere in your head there is the other half of it, still attached to the bulb, and still growing.

i only get the white chunks when i have bad seborrhea...other wise it is just the hair shaft that falls out (off?)

Question about seborrhea?

What up ALL!

I have a question about seborrhea. My scalp can be very flaky at times, but there is not red irritation, again just flaky at times with minor itch. Could this still be seborrhea or is it just normal dry scalp dandruff?

Thanks,

Tony

Tony, that sounds like normal, garden variety minoxidil-induced flaking. Two weeks after starting Nizoral, it calmed down.. then went away completely after about a month.

I just started Nizoral two days ago---I've had minor flaking ever since starting minoxidil last May. I'm going on Proscar soon and hopefully this will make conditions more hospitable to it.

How soon can you expect Nizoral to help flaking? Also, can it cause immediate sheds? It seems to be doing that to me, even though I guess that doesn't make much sense. (?)

hey, i sometimes get chunks of white stuff built up on my scalp... when i pick it off a patch of hair comes off with it. What is this?? When my scalp is clean i get hair loss but not with the little bulb at the end. Does this mean that the hair will grown in at the same thickness? thanks.

Sorry, I don't really know. There are people around here who know a lot about shedding, though. I'm pretty sure your questions have already been answered in some form or another in recent posts.

However, I'm pretty sure that when a hair has a bulb at the end, it means it's just entered a resting phase, which means it won't be popping up again for a few months. It will come back, but it will be thinner than last time.
