is there a way to tell by looking at the hair with a magnifying glass if it shedded from hair breakage as opposed to the knot coming loose?

Yes... if it's breaking off you will see a stub of hair above the knot. If the hair has come out because the knot is loose, it's probably already gone, obviously. A bit hard to tell if the knot itself is loose...

thanks. I should have been more clear in my original post. If I take hairs out of the brush and looked at them under a magnifying glass, is there a way to see if it came out from breakage or the entire hair because the knot became loose? I think I read somewhere the end of the hair would be sort of crimped if the entire hair came out from the knot becoming loose.

No, you need to look at the base itself.

The length of the hair will tell you...if long, knot got loose, if short, then it broke off. For example, if you wear a short hair, say 2 inches, and the sheded hair is 4 inches, then your knot got loose..
Looking at end of hair, if you see a small hook shape, then hair broke at base of knot...

Sorry, but that is just not true if the hair breaks at the knot.

Well I answered based on my experience ...and when my hair sheds at base most times at the end where the knot was, the hair is twisted or curved and you can see hook or curve shape, which was caused by the knot.. I wear 80 to 90% synthetic grey, lace, which could also be the reason why I see the hook shape at ends ( possibly synthetic hair keeps the knot shape more than human hair ? )

Yes, synthetic hair does not usually break, and you are correct about the hook shape.

It's the bleched knots of human hair that will break above the knot. You can see it under a scope... orphaned knots with no hairs... sad.
