Another of the EU's crackpot pieces of legislation came into force recently, and this one: the Food Supplements Directive, has outlawed the sale of a whole swathe of vitamins and minerals. In brief:
"The EU Commission has designated a list of permissible nutrients called 'The Positive List.' Specialist vitamin manufactures have expressed concern that their products containing organic ingredients, excluded from the 'List', are being compromised by synthetic or inorganic equivalents that are on the 'List.' All attempts to include a number of organic vitamins and minerals have been refused. Not only that, but to register their high quality products for sale could cost up to £120,000 per nutrient plus evidence of their safety. All nutrients must be paid for and registered by August 2005, putting small, medium and large suppliers of food supplements under intense pressure."
Apart from being infuriatingly paternalistic, the up-shot of this is that I am now unable to buy the yeast-free selenium which I've been taking for the past few years. The yeast-based stuff, apart from having a foul odour and taste, disagrees with my system, so does anyone know of a vitamin/mineral retailer with high-quality merchandise who ships worldwide?
Thanks in advance,
Slarti
