Safety of some non FDA medications....

I was just thinking that spironolactone or Revivogen are not FDA approved. Exactly how safe are these meds? Can they cause cancer? Can they affect a pregnant women? I really want to give Revivogen a try but am not sure how safe this topical is, especially when deciding to have a kid one day (God willing). Could Revivogen (or any non-FDA drug) cause any birth defects? That would be awful, just for sake of some stupid hair medicine.

Can Revivogen cross the blood-brain barrier? How do we know for sure if it's not FDA approved?
