Rusty water in my shower today...how bad is it?

Hey all,

I just realized after i showered today that the water was coming out practically orange... I then found out that work was being done on the oil heater...so I guess it was rust and whatnot. I am really freaking out hardcore; do any of you know how damaging this is for your hair and hairloss? Is the damage (if it is indeed damaging) reversible; and if so how long will it take to rectify? Please respond quickly if you can...I'm on the verge of shaving my head because of this. Thank you.

No, don't freak out about this. It's of no consequence.

Thanks for getting back to me. I'd feel a little better about it if you (or anyone) can tell me exactly why its of no consequence. Thanks.

It's a little rust in the water. Big deal. Your hair is exposed to air 24/7/365, and it's not exactly pure.

I read a bunch of stuff that said it would "choke" the follicles and lead to hair loss; in addition to making the hair quality greatly reduce and lead to breakage...is that just bollox? Thanks again.

You're falling into the trap of paranoia that so many of this forum's members find themselves. Don't go down that road.

Perhaps lol. I admit I was pretty freaked out... I'm just a scientist at heart you see, if someone just said "iron oxide doesn't worsen hair loss because it doesnt bind to the bla bla bla" I'd feel better; rather than someone just going "hey man, its cool" for unspecified reasons. Thanks alot.

Urg.. my hair condition kinda sucks right now...just bought a new shower head and filter; hope that will eventually make up for the damage I just did.

Look man, you didn't do any damage. Don't be an irrational fool. You're digging and digging for unending affirmation. How many people do you want to ram into your skull that you're fine? We've already told you so. If you keep asking, you will draw the attention of the board idiots who will try to make you feel doomed so that they have partners in misery. Just forget about the whole thing - no need to buy a new shower head, filter, or any other bullshit that appeals to your paranoia.

You are no better or worse off than before your rusty shower session. Case closed, and put this out of your mind forever.

Dude.. do you want me to post a picture one day before the rust; and one day after the rust? Because I can.. I'm not being irrational or a fool... just noticing an extremely clear difference; one that has been backed up by many other people mentioning it (without my asking).

I would like nothing more than for it to be true that I didn't do any lasting damage (and it may be so); but the change in my appearance seems to suggest otherwise. I don't think its crazy for me to ask if anyone actually has a scientific reason for why this shouldn't affect my hair loss/condition...as it seems logical to me to assume that in the action of dumping a whole load of rust filled water on your head, that some rust particles might jam themselves into the follicles. Also, my scalp has been red and itchy (which it has never been) and i feel all sorts of crusty deposits on my head. I'm just looking for some information more than "it didn't do anything"; because it clearly did. Thank you.

BTW.. I noticed that my scalp underneath my hair is super shiny after the incident... what caused that? Irritation causing sebum production or something? How do I rectify it?

Hairwegoagain, I dont know why you're getting so upset. Obviously he knows what he's talking about if he has pictures to back him up AND if other people are telling him so without him even asking. All he's asking for is a reason why it's nothing to worry about so he can relax. Why is that such a huge issue? That seems like a perfectly natuaral thing to me. If you don't know just say you don't know. Or if you do know then just tell him. There's no reason to get all up in arms.
