I have been using Rogain foam 5% for about 6 months. In that time I have noticed major thinning to the point of bald patches on my temples.

Not only that I swear my hair has thinned out all over as a result of using it. When I part my hair in the middle I see little new hairs sprouting in the thinner areas.

Does minoxidil effect the whole head and not just the areas it's applied to?

The front peak of my hair is also sprouting new hair and I don't apply there. Help!!!

It's possible it's affecting other area of the scalp, yes.
I've read studies that Bryan Sherwood (RIP) pointed out about subjects applying minoxidil to only one temple for over 6 months and some got results on the both temples.
Which could mean:
1) minoxidil is going systemic and affecting other areas of the scalp.
2) minoxidil gets over saturated on the skin.
There was study, that also Bryan brought to my attention, about 2% minoxidil getting saturated when it gets contact with the skin. Eventually that 2% minoxidil could be compared to 5%. I they also did tests with 5% but for some reason it didn't get over saturated.
