Regrowing hair w/minoxidil then finasteride

Just a simple question here that I've never really seen a definite answer to. It's probably been answered before.
Let's say you use minoxidil only for 2-3 years and regrow a lot of hair. Could you then stop using minoxidil and use finasteride instead and keep all of your hair, or are the hairs that you've regrown completely dependent on minoxidil? This confuses me, because I've seen many claim that the hairs regrown become dependent on minoxidil, but finasteride blocks DHT, so theoretically shouldn't the regrown hairs also respond to finasteride?

You can't really use simple logic in a case like that! It's been widely reported on hairloss site forums like this one over the years that you can't maintain hair regrown by minoxidil with finasteride alone. It was even reported by doctors in a case study published in a medical journal: they said every one of their patients who stopped using minoxidil had lost ground, even if they continued using finasteride.
