I haven't posted here in a long long time because I thought I was in the clear, turns out I'm definitely not. I've been taking minoxidil for about a year and a half now and had great results. I even grew back to almost a NW1, as hard to believe as that is. Well anyways I went away to college and rocked the shaggy cut that I'd always had, but on a recent trip home I said f*** it and got out some clippers and buzzed it all to 1/2 inch. Recently when I've been looking the mirror I've noticed my hair is starting to thin in the back pretty severely. I was wondering if anyone could help me with two questions: 1. I've been missing some treatments for the last 6 months or so, but usually get one in a day, could that be it? and 2. I started smoking a lot more heavily since I came up to school (beer and smoking, a match made in heaven I guess), and I've read that contributes to thin hair, any help?

Hi ugly -

You're probably noticing the additional thinning in back due to the new hair cut. It is suggested that you use Minoxidil 2x per day. There is no data comparing 1x a day application to 2x a day so we can't really tell you if this is responsible or not. I would always as a rule of thumb suggest doing what the label says though, and that would be 2x per day. Ramp yourself back up and stick to it religiously.

Also, you haven't filled out the "My Regimen" box on your profile so we have no way of knowing what else you're using, but make sure you're using Nizoral shampoo every 3 days and letting it soak in for the duration of the shower. This is imperative. If you have any irritation or itching from the rogaine you should also consider tricomin spray or folligen spray to handle that.

Minoxidil only really works in between 40 and 60 % of people so just know that you're using the weaker of the two proven treatments. Propecia works to maintain and slightly thicken in 83% of people. Its definitely the best for diffuse thinners. If worse comes to worse just start taking propecia and see how you tolerate it for a month. You should be good to go. Alternatively you can try adding a growth stimulant like Tricomin spray in combo with the rogaine but that will up your regimen on a daily basis. Only do what you can stick to.

Good Luck
