receding hairline...?

ok, my first post here. i think i'm somewhere between Norwood 1 and 2(closer to 2, like 1,7-1,8 maybe :) ). anyway, my hair has been like this for almost 5 years now. i'm 26 now and i first discovered that my hairline was receding about five years ago. i've looked at old photos and i've kind of always had this V shaped hairline(it sucks!). how do i know if i'm losing my hair or is it just supposed to be this way...? my hairline is basically the same now as it was five years ago. i have really thick hair, but my hairline is pissing me off. my scalp feels fine and i'm not losing any(that i'm noticing) hair in the shower...

so wtf is going on? my dad started losing his hair when he was about 40 years old and so did my uncles and my grandfathers...

so the thing is, is it possible to grow hair where i'm bald now(templates)? i've read something about minoxidil; that it might help (re)grow hair. i also read that it might cause you to lose hair(in the beginning), but if i just put it on the complete bald spots, nothing will happen? right?

i just want to fill out those templates. the rest of my hair is just fine; but i hate my v-shaped hair. so, should i try something?

since I started losing hair (5 months ago) I've been looking at people's hairlines a lot and have to come to the following conclusion.

The v-shape is OKAY. I think I would be cool with receding at the temples if the rest of my hair's thickness did not change. I think being a diffuse thinner (which I think I might be) is worse. Having all of your hair kinda go weak and thin sucks.

Wow, now that was a rambling with no useful info.

Sorry bout that...

i guess it could be worse; i don't see how i could lose the hair on top of my head. it's sometimes too thick(difficult to shape and style), so my hairdresser thins it out when i get my hair cut.

still, is it possible to grow hair in the front? would minoxidil alone help? i don't want to try any crappy pill that messes up my libido. i don't want to try minoxidil if it makes my hair fall out. are there any safe products out there? that might work, but will at least not cause any stupid side effects?

Late 20's here and I'm between norwood 5 and 6...although it's getting a lot better after i've been on minoxidil for 4 months (still waiting for my pack of finasteride)

There are guys on this forum that "complain" about having a norwood 2 or 3. I'd do anything to have a norwood 3!!!!!

You guys don't know how lucky you are.

I think that fact that your hair has not changed in 5 years is a good indication that your hair loss has halted or is in a resting phase.

Have you taken any meds at all?

Ok, so your hair has stabilised over 5 years with no further loss. But you have lost hair at each temple. If it's slick bald at the temples then what ever you take at this stage is unlikley to do anything.

If you feel that your hair loss has started again then yes, I would consider Propecia/Proscar to start with along with Nizoral. Then add Rogaine at a later date if needed.

If however your hair is solid as it was 5 years ago and there are no signs of thinning or extra loss then I would do nothing. Adding Propecia/Proscar when you don't need to could make things worse.

To fix your temples the best bet is to have a procedure done to fill them in. That's my advice anyway.

ok, thanks. the templates are slick bald, no hair whatsoever(wonder if i ever had hair there). the rest of the hairline is pretty solid. not diffuse. i don't think i lose hair and my hairline is stable(has been for 4-5 years now).

it's kind of weird. i have really thick hair, but already as a 20 year old i had a v-shaped hairline. so how long can this last? a few years? 5 years? 10 years? 20 years?

i don't want to do a hair transplant. too messy and cost too much.
