Hi,

My name is Rahul Awtaney (its usually hard to pronounce for my American counterparts) and I'm from Mumbai, India but I keep traveling to Seattle. 2 years back I was diagnosed with Androgenic Allopecia. Was advised to take Saw Palmetto capsules which I did. The hair loss still prevailed. Later about a year back, the Doctor advised that we need to concentrate on the dandruff on the scalp which was very very sticky and hard to remove. After reading about Seborrheic Dermatitis, I realized that I have the same since other areas such as the nose bridge and behind the ear as well, I used to find flaking. I started using Nizral shampoo from Johnson & Johnson and in a couple of weeks the scales started coming out but with a large number of hair. The scales are gone but I've also lost a lot of hair.

I have been trying to find out whether hair loss of this kind is permanent or temporary? My Doctor said its permanent. What do you guys say? Is it temporary or permanent. Its been about a month since my scalp is relatively scale free and the dandruff was there for about a year or less. Please advise.

I used to suffer quite badly, with seb derm on my face, and then last year i started applying raw honey on it, every other day for a month, and it really worked.

However it didn't work nearly as well as putting daktarin gold on the T-Zone

It's possible the nizoral has been harsh on your scalp, hair loss is a reported side effect, so it may not be permanent.

Maybe try a different anti dandruff shampoo.

It's probable that the saw palmetto isn't working and you'd be better off with propecia.

@awtaney, the exact same thing happened to me over the last few years. I had dry flaky skin on my scalp and when i tried to remove it, hair was coming out with it.
I use nizoral and t-gel shampoo which has completely gotten rid of the flaky stuff.
I dont know if the hairloss is permanent or not but the best bet is to try rogaine which is a growth stimulant. I dont know if propecia would be any use as this is used for treating regular male pattern baldness.

Andogenic alopecia is male pattern baldness, propecia will be more effective than saw palmetto.

In relation to the hair he's lost from seborrhiec dermatitis the propecia may not be any use. It sounds to me like he's lost the hair from pulling it out and he may not have male pattern baldness

That's fair enough, but he's also been diagnosed with male pattern baldness by a doctor and is taking saw palmetto to combat the male pattern baldness, reading the post the male pattern baldness seemed to come before the SD.

If you're going to take something to tackle male pattern baldness, then IMO propecia is more effective than Saw Palmetto

The timeline ...

2 years back I was diagnosed with Androgenic Allopecia. Was advised to take Saw Palmetto capsules which I did.
